What a great way to spend a beautiful day!  On April 28th, nineteen of our Active Older Adult members and program participants had an enjoyable visit to the scenic Norfolk Botanical Gardens.  They enjoyed riding the tram, viewing the flower gardens and having lunch together.

Another Active Older Adult trip will be planned for the fall. If you have any suggestions, please contact Clare Lorio, Associate Operations Director, at (757) 867-3300 x 227 or clare.lorio@peninsulaymc.org

Parents Learn to "Never Nag Again"

love and logic class

The Victory Family YMCA was pleased to host our second Love & Logic Parenting Series, "Never Nag Again", during our spring program session.

Through our partnership with Peninsula Community Chapel, 25 moms and dads sharpened their parenting skills and shared their trials and successes in support of one another.

Lorraine Pettijohn, facilitator, lead the class through practical parenting techniques to help them lessen stress and have more fun while raising  responsible children.  Check our fall Spirit Guide for classes.

A YMCA Weight Loss Success Story
bright beginnings
In March of 2009, after deciding to shed a few pounds after a frustrating shopping trip, Tiffany Barnes joined the Victory YMCA and reguarly participated in water aerobics classes and group exercise classes.

Keeping a food journal and eliminating fast food and snacking also became a part of her daily routine.

In May, Tiffany met with Franki Pivarnik, Community Wellness Director, who urged her to upgrade her wellness regime, increasing her workouts to five times a week and taking classes such as Kickboxing, Turbo Kick, Step and Pilates. Having a body fat analysis done every three months helped to motivate her as well.

When people started to notice her weight loss she became even more motivated.  Tiffany stated, "I never thought in a million years that I would go from a size 16 to a size 4. I have not weighed under 200 pounds since 2006."

Congratulations, Tiffany, on a job well done!  Your committment to wellness is an inspiration to our staff and our members.  Keep up the good work!

Quote-of-the-Month for Kids

Each month we'll feature a new quote for you to discuss with your children. The next time you bring them to the Y, they can talk with any of our department directors about the meaning of the quote for the month. All participants receive a small prize for their efforts.

The quote for April is:

"A person's true wealth is the good he or she does in the world."
