Greetings!
I had planned on starting out this newsletter bragging that I drove home from work last week, 2 days in a row, with the sunroof open on the car AND I saw my first robin. Both are sure signs of spring in my book. Well, just when you thought it was safe to go outside, the white stuff makes yet another appearance. I guess our only consolation is it won't last long.
Spring is coming, I promise. It's just taking a bit longer than I had hoped!
If you missed it, the Flea Market Under Glass, which was held in our greenhouse March 3rd-5th, was a huge success. We had over 2000 people enjoy the comforts of our warm and sunny greenhouse over the 3 days the event was open! Belinda and Bobby from Kare 11 TV even stopped out on Thursday to film a segment for their Saturday morning TV show, Grow with Kare. Everyone who attended had a great time. We all were inspired by the creativity and ingenuity of the over 40 vendors showing off their wares; we basked in the warmth of the sun under the glass of the greenhouse and pretended spring had arrived and saw lots of 'treasures' find their way to new homes.
Otten Bros., in partnership with Sue Whitney and JunkMarket Style, have another event planned for September. You won't want to miss this one. It will be bigger, better and even more fun than the last! Keep an eye on your inbox for more info on this upcoming mega-event.
Whew! March was a busy month, not only for our garden center, but for our fantastic and award winning Landscape Department. "What did they win", you ask? This is the first year Otten Bros. has exhibited at the Minneapolis Home & Garden Show. Our creative design team and our talented foremen showcased their abilities in a show stopping, beautiful & unique booth. In recognition for all their hard work, they were presented with the 2011 Rookie of the Year Award for our booth display. Congrats Otten Bros. Landscape Team! |

Minnesota Inspired Fruit Trees
Since winter is unwilling to go away, I thought now would be as good of time as any to give you another sneak peek at spring. Here are a couple of very 'Minnesoooota' fruit trees that sound like winter, but are 100% summertime fresh and tasty! May I introduce you to Frostbite Apple, Black Ice Plum and Hat Trick Apple?
Frostbite Apple was developed by the University of MN. It is truly a unique and novel apple. Frostbite is extremely cold hardy. This small apple packs a big punch of tangy sweet flavor; great for cider making and fresh eating. The texture is firm, crispy and super juicy! For you MN apple connoisseurs, Frostbite Apple literally has a great family tree. It is a parent to the Sweet 16 apple and a grandparent to Honeycrisp Apple. You can't get a more tastier lineage!

BlackIce Plum was born at the UW-River Falls! Professor Smith spent years crossing cherry plums with Japanese dessert plums. The fruits of his labors are BlackIce Plum Trees. BlackIce plums are blue-black with a very sweet and very juicy yellow flesh. This plum ripens earlier than other Midwest grown plums. We recommend a Toka Plum as a pollinator for BlackIce.

Hat Trick Apple's name is certainly apropos! Three U of MN apples make up this game winning combination espaliered apple tree. Honeycrisp, Zestar and Sweet 16 apples are all grown on ONE tree. This tree is trained to grow against a wall; taking up no space at all! It makes for really easy picking! Lou Nanne, Neal Broten and Dino Ciccarelli have nothing on this apple tree!
Imagine the fun of stepping out your back door and picking your own home grown fruit...yum! Otten Bros. carries over 35 varieties of Minnesota hardy fruit trees. Plant a few this spring and you'll be harvesting your own fruit in no time. |
