JunkMarket Style (JMS) and Otten Bros. Garden Center & Landscaping, along with a handful of amazing likeminded artisans and junkers, have come together to host a trunk show. Not just any trunk show, mind you, we're officially calling it the "It's More About ME, Less About You" event of the year!

Wow! What a winter we're having...snow, snow and more snow!  The availability of natural foods is starting to diminish and your bird feeders are increasingly more valuable to our feathered friends.

It's not often a new bird seed comes on the market.  I am excited about this one; Golden Safflower.  It is a must have at your feeding station! The first day I tried it, the Black Capped Chickadees went crazy!!!!!

Black Capps have always been a favorite of mine. I love a wild bird that greets you every day with its happy song and will learn quite quickly to eat out of your hand. The high oil, protein and fat content provide a higher energy source which makes Golden Safflower very attractive to Black Capps. The thin seed coat also it makes it very digestible with little or no waste.

Black Capps are a year round resident of Minnesota and a very popular bird at the bird feeder. They come readily to almost any feeder and zoom in and make their selection and then off they go to eat in the safety of a nearby shrub or evergreen. Condo, apartment and townhouse dwellers should try a window feeder for Black Capps; great up close viewing!

The Black Capps readily accept bird houses, especially those filled with a few wood chips for them to excavate and prepare for their new family. I always locate the nest box into the woods, say 25-30' as it seems to deter wrens from selecting it as a nesting site.

On your next visit to Otten Bros., stop by and pick up some Golden Safflower and drive the Black-capped Chickadees crazy! You will also find it drives the nuthatches, finches, cardinals, and rose-breasted grosbeaks crazy too!
