Greetings!
Employees having fun at Pink Night! | Happy August! I hope you are like me, and enjoying the last month of official summer. My kids are excited (and still complaining) about school starting in a month. I say, there is plenty of time left to enjoy picnics, games of bean bag or bocce and bonfires in the back yard. Enjoy your yard and the warm weather - I don't want to think about the alternative, yet! Many of you attended Pink Night, our fundraiser for breast cancer, at the end of June. What you may not have known, Otten Bros. had been chosen to serve as an example to encourage other garden centers across the nation to throw their own fundraiser for breast cancer based on Proven Winner's pink hydrangea named 'Invincibelle Spirit'! A video was created as part of the promotion. Click here to view the newly released video. Thank you, again, to all of you who helped us raise nearly $10,000 toward the cure. |
Kari Line - Otten Bros. Garden Center Manager | Ask Your Friendly Neighborhood Garden Center Manager! Kari, Otten Bros. Garden Center Manager, and her great staff help customers each week solve or prevent problems in their yards and gardens. Here are a few of the questions the staff were asked this past week and their answers. If you have a question you would like answered...email us! We will email you an answer. Your question might make it in our next newsletter in order to help other gardeners who have the same question about their yards. What can I do about Tomato Blight? Kari says, "First, how do you know you have it? Early Tomato blight usually occurs toward the end of the tomato growing season. Look for small, brown lesions on lower leaves that gradually enlarge and spread to the leaves higher in the tomato plant. These spots often develop dark, circular rings. Second, you need to try to catch signs of the disease as soon as possible so you can treat the disease promptly or it can be too late. Remove any diseased parts of your tomato plant as soon as you see signs of infection and destroy them. We recommend spraying your tomato plants with a fungicide called Ferti-lome Broad Spectrum Landscape & Garden Fungicide. Spray every seven to ten days or more frequently under severe conditions." I have heard you can increase my tomato harvest by using a spray - is this true? Kari says, "Yes, it is true AND it is not too late to use it. It's called Ferti-lome Tomato & Blossom Set Spray. This easy to use spray makes sure that almost every blossom bears fruit. On tomatoes it will produce larger, meatier tomatoes, earlier! You can also use it on cucumbers, strawberries, eggplants, melons, peppers, almost any veggie...okay, maybe not your zucchini, that is one plant that doesn't need help producing more! Tomato & Blossom Set Spray is a natural plant hormone that is environmentally friendly." |

Our goal this year is 1000 bikes; dropped off, refurbished and donated to kids this Christmas. Over 700 bikes were given away last year. |
August Gardening To-Do List
Whew! I sure can come up with a lot of adjectives to describe August so far; sultry, sticky, and just plain HOT. Hang in there, cooler nights are coming, even as the days sizzle. There are plenty of things on the garden-to-do list for August that will keep your flower and vegetable gardens looking nicer, longer, as well as the chance to get a head start on next year's garden. U$ele$$ Trivia Que$tion Congratulations! Kayla G. - you are last month's trivia question winner. Name at least 3 other terms, besides a herd, to describe a group of hippopotamuses? Possible answers: pod, dale, raft, school, bloat. This question is in honor of the weather. Can you name the author and the novel that the 1958 movie The Long, Hot Summer, starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, is based on? Good luck! Email us your answer and get a chance to win a $50 Otten Bros gift card! |
