Greetings!

Invincibelle Spirit Hydrangea
Invincibelle Spirit Bloom
"The sun will come out, tomorrow." Yes, I was singing that nostalgic tune yesterday, much to the annoyance of our staff who were working in the rain and cold greenhouse.  Our customers thought that song was appropriate, however.  Cart loads of annuals, hanging baskets and perennials were being put into trunks and back seats of cars yesterday in preparation for the upcoming beautiful weekend.

I must admit, I was not totally convinced about the weather report - but, I was optimistic.  Truckloads of fresh blooming annuals have been arriving over the past 2 days at all of our locations for just such a weekend.  In fact, the hydrangea everyone has been clamoring for is arriving todayInvincibelle Spirit Hydrangea will be in stock, ready for sale late this afternoon!  Make sure you stop in and get yours, the availability is very limited.

So get out and enjoy the sun.  Stop into the garden center to see all the fresh shipments of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs.  The greenhouse and sales lot are bursting.  We are excited to find good homes for our beautiful plants.  (I know several went home in my trunk, yesterday - just waiting for the "sun to come out"!)
Save the Date - Pink Night!
Invincibelle Spirit Logo
Thursday, June 24th, 5:30-8:30 pm.

Spend an amazing & fun "Pink Night" out on the town at Otten Bros.  Bring your friends and enjoy an evening of food, wine, and entertainment...all for a cause.

Invincibelle Spirit Hydrangea is the first Pink Annabelle Hydrangea to hit the market!   The breeders of this remarkable new plant (Proven Winners) have joined the fight in finding a cure for breast cancer.   $1 from every Invincibelle Spirit Hydrangea sold goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) through their Garden Center Campaign for a Cure.

Otten Bros. wants to take it one step further.  We are hosting a fundraising event for breast cancer that also has a local impact.  Our efforts on June 24th will benefit BCRF, The Piper Breast Center at Abbott Northwestern and our Garden Center Manager, Kari Line, as she raises funds to walk again in the Susan G. Komen- 3 Day for the Cure in honor of her mom, who is a survivor of breast cancer.  Our goal is to raise $10,000.

It will be an incredible night of fun with friends, food, wine and entertainment. All for a great cause.  Make sure you save the night of Thursday, June 24th to join us. An email invitation will go out the first week in June.  Continue to look for more details on our website! We hope to see you all there!

Welcome our Newest Addition!

computer mouseOur website has been undergoing some major overhauls during the past 6 months.  We are now proud to welcome our website's newest addition...Otten Bros. Plant Catalog. This catalog gives you access and information to nearly every tree, shrub and perennial in our inventory.  It enables you to search and research any time of day or night, 365 days a year.

Every plant has a photo along with a full description, hardiness, growing requirements, care instructions and landscape attributes. You can search by name or by requirements.   It is a great research tool and will allow you to organize and plan your next landscape project.

Otten Bros.  Plant Catalog gives you the option to print all the information and even build your own personal 'shopping list'. Bring your list with you when you are ready to buy your supplies.  It saves you time and allows our staff to better assist you.
Attracting Hummingbirds

hummingbirdWho doesn't love hummingbirds?  Everytime my kids or I see one in our garden, we just stop and watch.  They are amazing and a source of entertainment for all.  Attracting them to your gardens and yards is a relatively easy task.  Here are a few tips to get you started.
  • Be sure to put your feeders up before hummingbirds are expected in our area.  Mid-April to Mid-May in our neck of the woods. (get them up soon!)
  • Choose feeders that are easy to clean and have some red on it.
  • Best place to initially locate feeders are near red tubular flowers such as impatiens, salvia, bee balm, penstemon, etc.   Try to place the feeder out of the wind and where it will receive some shade.
  • Fill feeder with a sugar water nectar solution.  You can purchase pre-made, concentrate or make your own nectar with 1 part white table sugar to 4 parts water.  Boil for 1-2 minutes and cool.  (Never use honey or artificial sweeteners.)  Store unused portion of nectar in the fridge.
  • Change nectar every 2 days in hot weather.  The nectar can mold or spoil quickly during the summer.
  • If your feeder needs to be cleaned - scrub in a solution of hot water and vinegar.  Be sure to rinse well.
  • Leave feeders up and full of food until after a hard frost in the fall.  Your feeder will be of great help to migrating hummers who need to refuel on their way south.

Want to create a hummingbird haven?  Otten Bros. and the Flower Farm have a great selection of perennials, annuals, shrubs, hummingbird feeders and nectars.  We can help you start attracting hoards of hummers to your yard!
