Greetings!
Wow, this week, it finally feels like summer has arrived. My tomatoes and green beans are in full production mode and the weeds seem to pop up in my garden out of nowhere! Harvesting and watering have become daily events.
I know that this has become a typical August because my kids are already grumbling about going back to school. I have also seen signs of 'August' in the garden center! Sprinklers and hoses are some of our top selling items. Also, our fresh crops of summer annuals are a welcome sight to those of us, who, on occasion, forget to water their pots. (In this weather, it doesn't take long for the crispiness to set in. Not that I am admitting to anything!) Never fear, Otten Bros. has beautiful, blooming annuals to cover up a watering faux pas.
We are also bringing in perennials, trees and shrubs fresh each week. Gardening doesn't end when August begins. Here is our August Gardening to-do list ...
-Start dividing your Daylilies and Irises.
-Now is the best time to seed new lawns & patch bare spots in existing lawns. Make sure to finish seeding by September 15th.
-Continue deadheading annuals and some perennials to encourage more flowers.
-Finish pruning any evergreens by the end of the month to prevent winter injury to your plants.
-Keep on watering - your plants will love you!

It's A Tree Sale
All Shade, Ornamental &
Fruit Trees - 25% off reg. prices.
I am sure you have all heard or seen the recent storm damage suffered in Long Lake, Mound, Minnetonka, & surrounding areas last weekend. Otten Bros. was extremely fortunate not to suffer any damage to our building or our plant material. We, however, are very aware that many of our neighbors, friends, and our surrounding communities suffered property damage and lost many valuable trees.
Typically, Otten Bros. has a tree sale shortly after the MN State Fair to promote the fall planting season. Due to recent weather events, we have decided to move our tree sale up a month in hopes that it can benefit some of our neighbors.
Otten Bros. has an incredible selection of trees ranging from small $50.00 potted trees to large 4"+ B&B trees to tree spade size trees. We also offer convenient delivery and planting services if you need the extra help. We have 2 year extended warranty options for GRO Members and landscape customers.

Garden Stories
In June we asked for you to submit your gardening stories to us with the best story to receive a prize. The entries ranged from reminisces of gardening as kids to unique solutions to pesky gardening problems.
Thanks to all of our customers who participated. Congratulations to June V! She is this month's winner of a $50 Otten Bros. Gift Card. Here is her story...
Last summer I bought as a Mother's Day present the Ole and Lena roses developed by the University of MN for my mother who lives in Grand Forks, North Dakota. We were especially excited about the fact that they survive winters down to -40! They looked great throughout the summer and every time I talked to my mother on the phone she had to tell me how Ole and Lena were doing. When Ole was in bloom with pale pink roses, then Lena wasn't and when Lena was full of beautiful white to pink roses, then Ole wasn't. Although their relationship seemed to be good, it was also a bit cantankerous! Sadly Ole didn't make it through the harsh ND winter, but Lena came back strong and healthy this spring. (We women were always made of hardier stock,) When my mother came down for my daughter's high school graduation we traded the old Ole in for a new Ole and also bought Sven to keep things interesting up in North Dakota! Then I thought I couldn't let my mother have all the fun, so I bought Ole, Lena and Sven for myself and planted them in front of my front porch. Sure enough if ya wouldn't believe it! When dat Ole is blooming then Lena is taking a rest and when Lena is all spruced up and super fine lookin' then Ole is sulking in da corner, while Sven is looking handsome all the time! |
