Exemplary School designation is issued to individual schools in recognition of excellence in their efforts to evaluate strategically their purpose, operations, and educational programs. The design of the evaluation for Exemplary School designation is based on the short version of the Guide to Assessing Your School, a document jointly created by the Arts Schools Network and the Accrediting Commission for Community and Pre-collegiate Arts Schools (ACCPAS) as a way to assist arts school personnel with important responsibilities for planning, evaluating, and implementing effective organizational development. The Guide is an assessment tool that uses questions based on ACCPAS accreditation standards.
When a school is designated as an Exemplary School, it is not only recognized for improvement efforts, but it also gains positive exposure that helps in fundraising, advocacy, and networking. The selection process builds on the ASN partnership with ACCPAS.

Arts exposure makes students more altruistic, civically engaged, and socially tolerant. Need more proof of the transformation that happens when arts education is taken seriously in schools? Look no further than this inspiring profile of Bates Middle School, a public school in Annapolis, Maryland from our friends over at Edutopia. Bates has a full visual and performing arts program integrated across the curriculum, and they've seen significant improvements in student behavior and academic performance.

Earlier this year, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan voiced his support for dance, music, theater, and visual arts programs, calling them "essential to preparing our nation's young people for a global economy fueled by innovation and creativity." A new study from the University of Illinois at Chicago points to an equally important reason we need to make sure every school has a robust arts program: People who engage in the arts or watch others do so are more likely to be civically engaged, socially tolerant, and altruistic.

conference chair's message
|
| |
Dear ASN Members:
Chicago is awaiting your arrival! The Arts Schools Network will hold its annual conference in the Windy City October 16-19, and we have a fantastic schedule lined up.
This year's ASN conference theme, Urban Arts Education Landscapes, will offer an up close and personal lens on the vibrant and dynamic environment that is Chicago's arts education community at work. Site visits at both Chicago elementary and secondary public schools will showcase best practices in arts learning across a wide spectrum of diverse communities.
We are particularly excited about our host and sponsor for this year's conference, Columbia College Chicago. One of the nation's largest arts, media and communications colleges, Columbia is rolling out the red carpet for ASN, and conference participants will be treated to a spectacular week of learning, sharing, and discovery. If you are unfamiliar with Columbia, I can guarantee you that you will not be disappointed!
In addition to school visits (for those coming earlier in the week) and an insider's look into the magic of Columbia, you will also enjoy discovering Millennium Park along with a history of its manifestation; you will visit the new Modern Wing at the world famous Art Institute of Chicago; student performances from local arts partners, schools, and the college will nurture your soul; and of course highly relevant and timely breakout sessions will increased your knowledge of how the field at large continues to shift and evolve. Finally, the opportunity to engage and dialogue with national arts school leader peers is always a favorite component for ASN conference participants.
If you have not already finalized your plans, please do so now. We're nearly a month out, and the weeks are flying by! I invite you to the world- class city that is Chicago and look forward to sharing its treasures with you. See you next month! David Flatley ASN Board Member and Chicago Conference Chair Executive Director Center for Community Arts Partnerships |

Whether they are fulfilling their arts elective requirements for graduation or are pursuing accelerated training through the School of the Arts Certificate Program, all students are trained by faculty who are accomplished teachers as well as noted working artists in their respective fields.
The School of the Arts opened in 1991, fulfilling the school's long-standing commitment to arts education. A member of the International Network of Performing and Visual Arts Schools, it was among the first six schools in the nation to be recognized by the organization as a Network Star School. Among its many notable accomplishments, the School of the Arts has earned the Arts Excellence Award from the Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education.

| the impact of charter schools on public and private enrollments |
| cato institute, policy analysis august 28 by richard buddin
Charter schools are publicly funded schools that have considerable independence from public school districts in their curriculum development and staffing decisions, and their enrollments have increased substantially over the past two decades.
Charter schools are changing public and private school enrollment patterns across the United States. This study analyzes district-level enrollment patterns for all states with charter schools, isolating how charter schools affect traditional public and private school enrollments after controlling for changes for the socioeconomic, demographic, and economic conditions in each district.
While most students are drawn from traditional public schools, charter schools are pulling large numbers of students from the private education market and present a potentially devastating impact on the private education market, as well as a serious increase in the financial burden on taxpayers.
Private school enrollments are much more sensitive to charters in urban districts than in non-urban districts. Overall, about 8 percent of charter elementary students and 11 percent of middle and high school students are drawn from private schools. In highly urban districts, private schools contribute 32, 23, and 15 percent of charter elementary, middle, and high school enrollments, respectively. Catholic schools seem particularly vulnerable, especially for elementary students in large metropolitan areas.
The flow of private-school students into charters has important fiscal implications for districts and states. When charters draw students from private schools, demands for tax revenue increase. If governments increase educational spending, tax revenues must be increased or spending in other areas reduced, or else districts may face pressures to reduce educational services. The shift of students from private to public schools represents a significant shift in the financial burdens for education from the private to the public sector.

| art institute of chicago upcoming exhibition september 24-february 24
Immerse yourself in the richly creative environment of one of today's most innovative architectural firms with Building: Inside Studio Gang Architects, the first exhibition in the world devoted to the Chicago-based group headed by MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang. This innovative presentation of the work of Studio Gang Architects (SGA) allows visitors to see how buildings and projects are created, what issues they resolve, and how solutions are shaped. Rightly recognized for such landmark buildings as Chicago's Aqua Tower, SGA is as much a laboratory for ideas and problem-solving as it is an architectural firm. Building brings visitors into that laboratory by examining SGA's built and unbuilt works in an engaging studio-like space.

It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. | interconnected: the sculpture of yvonne domenge | | millennium park exhibition ends october 21
Chicago's Millennium Park will come alive this season with four large-scale sculptures by the acclaimed Mexican artist Yvonne Domenge gracing the Park's Boeing Galleries through October 21, 2012. Framing the dramatic art and architecture of the Park, Interconnected: The Sculptures of Yvonne Domenge will enhance one of Chicago's most popular public spaces-Millennium Park. Admission to the Park and the exhibition is free.
Yvonne Domenge's fascination with organic shapes, form and geometry will be evident in the four pieces of colorful artwork created specifically for Millennium Park. One of the pieces will be placed in the North Boeing Gallery while the other three will be installed in the South Boeing Gallery.
The largest piece, a bronze sculpture painted bright red entitled Tree of Life, measures approximately 16 feet tall and will sit in the North Boeing Gallery, along with two companion seeds measuring four feet wide by nine feet high. An age-old concept, the tree of life is a symbol of the connection between the underworld, the sky, and the terrestrial world in pre-Columbian cultures. The tree symbolizes life's energy, and the seeds scattered beneath represent the beauty and fragility of new life.
