santa fe university of art and design offers arts schools network members scholarship opportunity

Dear Arts Schools Network Member,

Santa Fe University of Art and Design is pleased that we can extend a generous scholarship offer to your students. As the title sponsor of Arts Schools Network's Life in the Arts series, we're committed to making an arts education accessible for talented students. That's why we're offering principals, teachers, and counselors at ASN member schools the opportunity to nominate up to three students to receive a 60% off tuition scholarship at Santa Fe University.

This scholarship, worth $17,300, is renewable for four years (provided the student remains in good standing, with a minimum 2.75 GPA). Prospective students must enroll for fall 2012. They must meet all of our scholarship and admissions requirements, including the portfolio or audition requirements of the program of their choice.

So think of which students you feel have the greatest talent and potential as artists, and which would make the most of this rare and exciting offer. The nomination process is easy: just click here for the nomination form, to be filled out by a counselor or teacher and signed by the school's principal. With the form, include a statement describing how the student's attributes and commitments align with Santa Fe University's mission.

I hope you-and your most innovative students-will take advantage of this opportunity. We're excited to meet the creative minds you send our way!

Sincerely,

Larry Hinz

President

Santa Fe University of Art and Design

Santa Fe University of Art and Design (formerly the College of Santa Fe) is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association, www.ncahlc.org.

The Los Angeles County Arts Commission is launching a national search for a Director of Arts Education to head the Arts for All collaboration in L.A. County. As many of you learned at AEP, Ayanna Hudson, who has led this initiative since its inception in 2001, is leaving to become Director of Arts Education for the National Endowment for the Arts. The Arts Commission is now seeking a senior level arts education administrator with outstanding executive experience to step into the director's position. Currently 49 of 80 school districts representing 550,000 students have joined the collaboration; the Director of Arts Education is the point person for bringing Arts for All to scale with all L.A. County school districts participating.

Greetings members and friends!

This is an action packed issue of our bi-weekly e-news. As a member benefit, we insert news, opportunities and job postings FREE for our members. It's hard to fit all the good things happening in our schools into one issue.

Last week our Board of Directors met in Chicago thanks the generous hospitality of our title conference sponsor, Columbia College. Our board meeting followed the typical flow of recapping our last board meeting minutes, checking in on our financial health, hearing from our committee chairs and leading into the future. There are exciting plans unfolding for our membership, born out of your networking requests.

Important reminder, our May 15 deadline for our annualAwards nominations and Exemplary School Designation consideration is fast approaching. Over the next week, our annual conference schedule will be posted with registration opening shortly after. Our October 16-19 conference theme and title is Urban Arts Education Landscapes.

This is the thrilling final stretch, the last lap, the crescendo of our collective school year. Pull your shoulders down, pull your head up, and breathe the invigorating scent of success, succession and regeneration. Exhale failures, lessons learned and re-learned. I wish you soft eyes, smiling lips, and an open, loving heart.

SCPA to Benefit from NEA Grant to the Mayerson Foundation

Pianist Emanuel Ax; violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg; drummer Philip Paul; tenor Rodrick Dixon have all visited the School for Creative & Performing Arts(Cincinnati, Ohio) to provide students with world-class instruction.  That's the purpose of the Artistic Excellence Fund which is supported and operated by The Mayerson Foundation.  Now the Foundation whose contribution to the SCPA capital campaign helped to complete the $72 million effort to build the new SCPA has been awarded one of the most highly prized grants in the country.  The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has awarded The Mayerson Foundation a $45,000 grant for the 2012-13 Artistic Excellence Fund.  The Foundation will match the NEA's support with $45,000 of its own.  The funding will be used for the Master Artists Series and for the Artists-in-Residence Program.  The Residence Program brings world-class musicians from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra to SCPA on a weekly basis to provide one-on-one instruction and ensemble coaching through the Mayerson Brass and Percussion Ensemble-in-Residence Programs.  Cincinnati Ballet and the Contemporary Arts Center are also part of the collaboration that leverages the resources of Cincinnati's key arts organizations on behalf of the talented students at SCPA

"Our work is just beginning here at SCPA," said Dr. Neal H. Mayerson, President of the Mayerson Foundation.  "This grant from the NEA is huge validation of the work we're doing and of the quality of the faculty, administration and wonderful facilities here at SCPA," added Dr. Mayerson.

We also emphasize an understanding that each student can make positive change in the future, through the continued search for knowledge and exploration of all cultures.

The arts play an integral role in our school culture here at the Durham School of the Arts. Students have many venues for expressing themselves, with two full-time art galleries, a 1600-seat auditorium, two dance studios and a black-box theater.

arts education partnership launches online arts ed research clearinghouse

artsedsearch

ArtsEdSearch is a project of the Arts Education Partnership (AEP)

A growing body of knowledge documents that in addition to academic outcomes, an education in the arts contributes directly to the development of:

  • cognitive outcomes such as critical and creative thinking,
  • personal outcomes such as persistence and self-confidence, and
  • social and civic outcomes such as cross cultural understanding and collaboration.

Until now, if you wanted to gather the research comprising that body of knowledge, you would have to look far and wide to find it. And once you found it, you then might find yourself trying to make sense of it. AEP designed ArtsEdSearch.org as a digital clearinghouse-a kind of online one-stop shop for research and policy information about the educational outcomes of arts learning, both in and out of school. At ArtsEdSearch.org, high quality research is available in one place, readily accessible, and easily understandable. To date, ArtsEdSearch.org contains 200 summaries of research studies that include all arts forms and all levels of education, and this content will increase each year. AEP invites you to visit and explore ArtsEdSearch.org; there's nothing else like it in the field!

campaign aims to raise $5 million for theatre education

education weekby erik robelen

education week online edition blogpost

may 2 2012

A new fundraising initiative is looking to bring in $5 million to support theater education in 19 U.S. cities. It comes as a recent federal report suggests that access to drama and theater instruction in elementary schools has sharply declined over the past decade, and at the secondary level, it's harder to come by in high-poverty schools than those serving more-affluent populations.

The new campaign, dubbed Impact Creativity, was launched this week with a $200,000 gift from accounting firm Ernst & Young LLP and its partners and principals. It's being orchestrated by the National Corporate Theatre Fund, based in New York City.

The new campaign aims to "motivate corporations, foundations, and individuals to help shape a more intelligent, diverse, confident, and creative 21st-century workforce by investing in arts and theater education as essential learning," said Bruce Whitacre, the executive director of the National Corporate Theatre Fund, in a press release. The organization's 19 member-theaters serve an estimated 500,000 children, most from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, through their theater education programs, the press release says. view blog post
