president's message

Dear ,

We hope this e-news finds you managing your spring fever and sustaining your arts education fervor.

With the recent release of two Seminole reports, NEA's The Arts and Achievement in At-Risk Youth, and NCES' Arts Education in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools, arts school leaders are buzzing about findings and implications. Next up, AEPR Journal's call for papers for the next issue focusing on Teacher Evaluation in the Arts, our field is benchmarking and positioning for improvements. This is a very exciting time in arts education history! See the reports below in this enews.

Our master series, Life in the Arts, evolves with the interests of our students as documentarians, journalists and performers as they further investigate arts career pathways.

Through our Exemplary School designation program, schools are recognized for improvement efforts and gain positive exposure that helps in fundraising, advocacy, and networking. The selection process builds on the ASN partnership with the Accrediting Commission for Community and Precollegiate Arts Schools (ACCPAS).

Membership renewal and recruitment of new members has never been more important than today. There are many entry points into our network, through our committees, we are creating new services to meet the unique needs of arts school leaders. Annual conference content is directly mined from our membership with this year's call for proposals closing April 15.

Sincerely,

Kristy Callaway

nea report shows benefits of arts education for at-risk youth

nea report

A new study from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) shows that at-risk students can excel academically with intensive arts education. According to the new NEA report Arts and Achievement in At-Risk Youth: Findings from Four Longitudinal Studies, "At-risk teenagers or young adults with a history of intensive arts experiences show achievement levels closer to, and in some cases exceeding, the levels shown by the general population studied. These findings suggest that in-school or extracurricular programs offering deep arts involvement may help to narrow the gap in achievement levels among youth."

national center for education statistics releases new report on arts education in US public schools.

nces reportThis Statistical Analysis Report presents selected findings from seven congressionally mandated arts in education surveys. These surveys were designed to provide national estimates of the characteristics of arts education in public K-12 schools for the 2009-10 school year and to allow comparison to selected estimates from an earlier study done in 1999-2000. This report provides national data about arts education for public elementary and secondary schools, elementary classroom teachers, and elementary and secondary music and visual arts specialists.

grammy goes to douglas Anderson, arts magnet is nation's best in high school music

Douglas Anderson School of the Arts today was named the 2012 National Grammy Signature School by the Grammy Foundation in Los Angeles. The award signifies that Douglas Anderson is the No. 1 high school music program in the country. David Sears, senior director of education programs for the Grammy Foundation, announced the award in Los Angeles.

This is the second time in three years that Douglas Anderson has been named the national signature school. It previously earned the award in 2010.   The award honors the entire music program at Douglas Anderson, including the instrumental, vocal, piano, guitar, electronic music and recording arts. "Winning the Grammy National Signature School award is a huge affirmation for the students and the faculty at DA," said Ace Martin, chairman of the school's Music Department. "We are all focused on achieving excellence both in performance and curriculum, and it's terrific to get validation of all of our hard work."  The Grammy Foundation identifies public high schools that demonstrate exceptional integration of all areas of music - from performance in multiple musical areas, to intensive study of musical theory. The award comes with a $15,000 cash prize that will be put toward the needs of the music department, Martin said. "I always dreamed of our department winning the National Grammy Award," said Martin, who has taught at Douglas Anderson since 1985. "To win it twice is an amazing achievement that makes us very proud of our students and the music education in Duval County," he said.
