MEMBER SCHOOL spotlight
a.w. dreyfoos school of the arts
west palm beach, fl | |
Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts was founded in 1989 as the premier arts high school in the School District of Palm Beach County, the nation's eleventh largest school district, serving a county geographically larger than Rhode Island or Delaware.
Originally known as the Palm Beach County School of the Arts and located on the northern shore of Lake Mangonia, the name of the school changed in 1997 when local arts philanthropist Alexander W. Dreyfoos, founder of Photo Electronics Corporation, made the single largest private contribution to a public school in Florida. This generous contribution coincided with the school's much-anticipated move to the newly renovated, historic Central Schools campus in downtown West Palm Beach.
The school's location in downtown West Palm Beach places it in the heart of Palm Beach County's cultural landscape. Just across Iris Street is the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, and within a few blocks are the Norton Museum of Art, the Armory Art Center, Palm Beach Dramaworks, the Cuillo Center for the Arts, and the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden. Opportunities are bountiful for students to participate in the local cultural community.
Admission to the school is based upon a highly competitive audition process that is open to all Palm Beach County students entering grades nine through twelve. There are nine unique arts conservatories for which students may audition: communication arts, dance, digital media, music - band, music - piano, music - strings, music - vocal, theatre, and visual arts. Students are admitted into one area, enrolling in at least two arts area courses each school year. Dreyfoos students often possess interests beyond their designated art area; enrollment in additional arts courses in another area of study is sometimes permitted in the junior or senior years.

| executive director's message | | |
Dear , | |
Greetings members and friends! We just wrapped up our January 2012 conference in Florida and are using the feedback to plan our next conference October 15-19, hosted by Columbia College in Chicago. Additionally, we are preparing to launch our FY13 membership drive, announce changes to our Exemplary School Program, solicit Best Practices from our member teachers to share with our online community, and host and post our spring Life in the Arts web series.
Inwardly, we have been increasingly converting to a virtual organization. For the past four years, we have NOT had a bricks and mortar space. All of our foot traffic comes to us via the internet. Last summer we rolled over our new website, which along with e-communications has replaced printing and shipping. Last semester we launched our Life in the Arts series, created by students for students and posted it online as a complimentary service to members. The inaugural On Your Way Student Talent Recognition Program was also entirely executed online. We have been building the foundation and will begin archiving best practices online for members' access. This spring, we will accept all program applications and submissions electronically. Noble Hour is our new social media community service partner. And still, there is much more work to do! So what will this look like in the near future?
Have you heard of the world's first international virtual contemporary art fair? The VIP Art Fair builds new technologies for the world's most prominent contemporary art galleries to showcase available works by the artists they represent. It enables sophisticated collectors to connect with these galleries, and for the international art community to experience and engage with art. VIP Art Fair translates the experience of a traditional bricks-and-mortar fair to an online environment, serving as a site for exploration and conversation while empowering the relationship between collector and dealer. It is a filter to the most prominent contemporary art galleries in the world, and as the company grows, it will continue to innovate and engage the art community with new ways to connect, experience and understand art.
Like VIP Art Fair for the visual art world, Arts Schools Network has become the go-to organization for those seeking information which our membership provides. Entities interested in new solutions to old problems, inquiring of our creative capital include, administrators needing to network with their peers, new & emerging schools needing practical nuts & bolts information, human resources recruiting new leaders for their schools, granting organizations looking for matches, researchers testing hypotheses, parents/students shopping for their next school investment, and the media/press attempting to codify their writing against reality.
Arts education occurs in the third space between student and master teacher, space has environmental requirements in order for this quality experience to occur. Arts Schools Network needs only the internet and its membership to assign value to our organization. Our 'real estate' is derived from our hard working board of directors, committees, strategic partners, and as the Executive Director, it is my personal commitment to expand our virtual environment to accurately represent the diversity and excellence of our membership's daily efforts. I welcome as to how to creatively and effectively get us there!
Sincerely,
Kristy Callaway
Executive Director

Today's video includes many references to the new conceptual framework which is under development for the next generation of Arts Standards. A draft preliminary version of the framework is available as a link above. This PDF represents our work to date and is subject to change as the work develops. In sharing an early draft version of the framework to the field you are able to see how Philosophical Foundations, Lifelong Goals, Learning Strands, and other components under discussion can fit together, inform the standards development process, and provide a visual map for teaching and learning in the arts. This version remains under discussion by the NCCAS Leadership Team and Framing Committee.
