executive director's message | |
Dear ,
Greetings members and friends!
Surfing my social media addictions I came across this cool study via an Americans for the Arts blog entry by Tom Tressor. I don't know Tom face to face but I like where he is going online. Tom was blogging about preparing future leaders for creativity and business, embedding a link to a study to illustrate some pretty BIG points.
Called, Working beyond Borders, Insights from the Global Chief Human Resource Officer Study (created and posted by The IBM), this study summarizes responses from over 1,500 Chief Executive Officers from around the world about what they believe are the most important leadership qualities inthe next five years.
How do we synthesize this leadership skill set for our students and emerging leaders? According to the CEOs...
Cultivate creative leaders - who can more nimbly lead in complex, global environments
Mobilize for greater speed and flexibility - produce significantly greater capability to adjust underlying costs and faster ways to allocate talent
Capitalize on collective intelligence - through much more effective collaboration across increasingly global teams.
So what does this look like? Accouding the CEOs...
Isn't this great stuff?!
Trend words from way back in 2010 are predicting leaders of 2015 and that is just around the corner. We have a lot of work to do in the three years!
Change, invite, disrupt, innovate, enterprise, ambiguity, alter status quo, and invent - all words from IBM study used to describe the creative leader we are to produce. I can whole heartedly embrace this business model.
I feel an occupy innovation movement coming on....however let's not disturb Mother Nature, let's lead from the future through our students.
Sincerely,
Kristy Callaway
Executive Director

amnesiac cellist astounds doctors with musical memory
11-13-11

by ian sample, scientist correspondent
German musician who lost nearly all memory after contracting herpes encephalitis can learn new pieces of music. Large parts of the cellist's medial temporal lobes were wiped out by a virus, leaving him unable to recall much of his past. Photograph: Pete Saloutos/Corbis
A professional cellist who lost nearly all of his memory after a virus destroyed parts of his brain has astonished doctors with his remarkable recall of music.
The 71-year-old, known only as PM, had played with a major German orchestra before contracting the infection that devastated his brain's memory centres in 2005.
The illness left the musician with such profound amnesia he could remember almost nothing of his past and was unable to plan for the future. The only people he recognised were his brother and a care worker.
"He can hardly remember a thing. He has no memory of any personal or professional events," Carsten Finke, a neurologist at Charit university hospital in Berlin, told the Guardian. "He is living in the moment, more or less. He has lost his whole life."
Doctors made their discovery when they tested PM's ability to recall musical information and found he could identify the scales, rhythms and intervals of pieces they played him. The man went on to score normally on a standard test for musical memory.
But it was later tests that surprised doctors most, when the cellist showed he could learn new pieces of music, even though he failed to remember simple information, such as the layout of his flat, who his doctors were and what medicines he should take.

an art-felt gesture
by zulimarie nazario
I WISH I HAD a rubber stamp that says, "Art Saves Lives."
Zulmarie Nazario, 16, of Philadelphia, received the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from first lady Michelle Obama on behalf of the Fleisher Art Memorial, which was recognized for its effectiveness in developing learning and life skills in young people by engaging them in the arts and creative experience. The award is the nation's highest honor for after-school arts and humanities programs.
Maybe I'd use it in one of my abstract drawings that I like to create. Or, maybe I'd decorate the walls in my room at home - not that I'm the one who needs to be reminded about the power that art has in our lives.
No, I'm one of the lucky ones.
I've been going to Fleisher, in South Philadelphia, for the past three years. And I have loved every minute of it. I attend Fleisher's Teen Lounge, a place where teenagers can learn about art, make art, talk about art and generally hang out and be ourselves for a couple of hours every week.
The Teen Lounge has given me an opportunity to expand my knowledge of the arts. I feel like a totally different person when I step into Fleisher. It allows me to express my feelings and not be afraid of being judged. I'm not self-conscious there; I don't experience any of those put-downs that you may see and feel in high school.
I'm really proud that Fleisher just won the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award this year. I even got to meet first lady Michelle Obama when the award was given at the White House. (That experience is a whole other essay.)
In the Teen Lounge, artists and teachers appreciate my art as much as I do, and that is the most important thing about Fleisher. They appreciate and value your artwork for what it is. That's why I keep coming. Everyone gets to be themselves through the arts. Students in the Teen Lounge learn to be unique and creative. The arts at Fleisher help students to find out who they are and who they want to be.
Every time I sit down to draw, I focus on what's important to me and then I see that come to life in my drawing. The artwork I make shows what I am capable of, and it makes me look at what I need to work on. You can think of things no one thinks of when drawing. Imagination can take you to so many different levels. I know I'm just at the beginning of what I want to explore.
Does my time in Fleisher's Teen Lounge make me a better student? Yes, I believe it has, in some way or another. I do see myself using what a teacher at Fleisher called "creative thinking skills" every day. What's really important is that my time at Fleisher has given me the self-confidence to try to solve other problems and to see things in my life at home and my life in school from different perspectives.
On second thought, maybe we don't need a rubber stamp that says "Art Saves Lives," since art shouldn't be labeled. It's creative. It's Me.
And I think it could be you.
Zulmarie Nazario is a junior at the Academy of Palumbo, in South Philadelphia. She is thinking about becoming an obstetrician or a nurse. She'll always be an artist.

bitter departure for miami's ballet patriarch
by daniel j. wakin
Morning class at the Miami City Ballet had just ended one day in late September when the dancers and staff gathered in the main studio for a companywide meeting with their founder, artistic director and patriarch, Edward Villella.
Mr. Villella spoke of his pride in them and his joy at the success of a recent Paris tour. And then, pushing down sobs, he read a news release with stunning news: Mr. Villella would leave the company after next season. The dancers gasped, wept and hugged. At a board meeting later that day they streamed in looking for answers.
For many of them Mr. Villella was the only artistic director they had ever known. For Miami he was the force behind one of the nation's finest regional companies, a troupe at the height of its renown. For the dance world he was a legend, one of the greatest male dancers produced by the United States.
The company's board leadership called Mr. Villella's departure a mutual decision. But although his age - 75 - suggests that retirement was not far off, Mr. Villella was forced out, according to recent interviews with his supporters on the board, friends and others familiar with the company.
"He's still working like dynamite," said Bob Avian, a board member. "Personally I'm very upset that Edward's been relieved."
Jennifer Carlynn Kronenberg, a veteran principal dancer, said Mr. Villella was not leaving of his own will. "All of us felt that he had more to give," she said.
Mr. Villella's departure appears to stem from gathering friction with key board members regarding questions of authority, the company's financial future and who holds ultimate sway over a ballet troupe that was artistically synonymous with Mr. Villella but financially dependent on wealthy Floridians.
Mr. Villella declined to discuss the reason for his departure. He did point out, however, that he was in excellent health and full of energy. "I'm not the retiring type, shall we say," Mr. Villella said in an interview in New York, where he and his wife, Linda, who runs the company's ballet school, were looking for a new place to live. "But there are many, many things that I haven't done, and I shall pursue those."
They include writing, teaching and working on a multimedia dance project, he added. He will depart in the spring of 2013, but under an unpublicized agreement with the company he will be paid for another year.
"I love what I do," Mr. Villella said. "I love my dancers. Will I be sad when I leave them? Sure I will be. But that's a normal thing. These are my guys."

Robert K. Greenleaf
1904-1990
The Servant as Leader, excerpt from essay
It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions...The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature.
Servant Leadership is not a concept or a principle. It is an inner standard of living which requires a spiritual understanding of identity, mission, vision and environment.
