MEMBER SCHOOL spotlight
orange grove middle magnet school of the arts, tampa florida

On February 2, 1926, the School Board met and approved the site as the location for the new Orange Grove Elementary School. The cost of the site was $45,000. M. Lee Elliott was appointed architect and began to design the school. Mr. Elliott had also designed Tampa's City Hall, Centro Asturiano Theater, and Gorrie and Philip Shore Elementaries.

The company of G.H. Cooper was awarded the construction contract on August 6th of that year. The building cost was set at $127,800. On June 2, 1927, James McIntosh was appointed as the first principal of Orange Grove. His salary was set at $175 per month!
The name Orange Grove was derived from the grove of trees which existed on the south side of the campus. In the decades that followed, Orange Grove served a population which was rich with pride and spirit. Evidence of tradition was the yearly May Day festivals and Halloween carnivals. These events provided many lasting memories for all who shared in them.
In 1971, as part as the court-ordered desegregation law, Orange Grove became a Sixth Grade Center. Then, in 1985, a 1.2 million dollar renovation and remodeling project updated the original structure. Finally, in 1998, when Orange Grove became a part of the Magnet School Initiative, our current structure was added at a cost of 8.9 million dollars! We are proud to be a part of the lasting legacy that is Orange Grove.

| culture builds florida's future | | |

A campaign just launched in Florida to promote the state's cultural assets as a means for economic stimulation. Culture Builds Florida was announced last week in Tampa by Secretary of State Kurt Browning. He noted the main push behind the campaign was the $3 billion that arts and culture groups take in each year, and the nearly 90,000 jobs they sustain. "Arts can be an economic draw in our communities," Browning said. "We intend to promote the variety of ways arts and culture can create jobs, stimulate the economy and contribute to Florida's tourism."

| executive director's message | | |
Dear ,
Greetings members and friends!
Our board meeting last week was an amazing coming together of top arts school leaders who are guiding this organization to even greater success. Special thanks to New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts for hosting! Our scrumptous meals were catered by NOCCA's culinary arts students and we ended our meeting with a tour of the facility, met faculty and observed various arts classes.
Action items included:
- The board selected 2012-13 officers and future board members targets.
- The master series Life in the Arts is in full swing with 2 of 9 episodes posted and we have plans to expand offerings in the spring, inviting schools to submit episodes for stipends.
- On Your Way student competition window closes Nov. 15 giving students a great opportunity for top college faculty to provide feedback and for students to maintain an online portfolio.
- There is a renewed effort to recruit more elementary and middle arts schools as they are the feeders to all of our member high schools.
- We will be increasing our efforts to connect directly with students and hope you encourage them to join ASN for free.
After the board meeting, in true New Orleans fashion, we walked back to our hotel through a voodoo parade. The weather was cool, breezy and rainy...perfect for the undead arts school leaders masquerading as locals. Such fun! Ahh, there is more time than life.
Sincerely,
Kristy Callaway

surdna foundation announces judilee reed
new program director for thriving cultures program
As the Executive Director of Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC), Ms. Reed established and led successful projects focusing on building the capacity of community-centered arts organizations, improving artists' access to information about America's changing health care policies, generating awareness of the increasingly diverse demographics of communities around the country. Ms. Reed holds a B.A. in art history and a B.F.A. in painting from the University of New Hampshire, and alumni status at Harvard Business School.
Ms. Reed will take over leadership of Surdna's Thriving Cultures Program at an auspicious time as the focus has been expanded over the past year to include: Artists Engaging in Social Change, an effort to strengthen the capacity of artists and cultural organizations to engage in social change efforts; and Community Driven Design, through which disadvantaged cultural groups have a voice in the design planning of public places. The Thriving Cultures Program will continue its support for Teens' Artistic Advancement.
Phillip Henderson, Surdna's President, said, "We are thrilled to have Judilee joining the Surdna team. She brings exceptional creative vision and programming experience, and her broad knowledge of community-building will add to the Foundation's cross-program and collaborative style of work. Judilee has always been committed to the power of art in communities and shares Surdna's view of the importance of equity." Additional information is available from the Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC) Website.
Related to this announcement, Lynn Stern was promoted to Senior Program Officer of the Thriving Cultures Program. Stern has served as program officer of Surdna's Thriving Cultures (formerly Arts) Program for 5 years, playing a central role in the development of new lines of work; in particular she led the development of Artists Engaging in Social Change. Stern has also provided leadership to Surdna's New Orleans Fund initiative. Prior to joining the Surdna Foundation, Lynn worked as an independent consultant to philanthropic organizations and nonprofit groups, and served as project specialist to the Ford Foundation's Media, Arts and Culture unit.

| book drum launches interactive map for literature | |
Book Drum has assembled multimedia profiles of 150 great books. Discover more about us here. One part of each profile is an illustrated Setting. We've now brought these together in a brand new internet phenomenon: an interactive crowd-sourced literary world map. Click on a red pin to read about a book setting, or just roam the map in search of your next geographically-inspired read! If you'd like to add a book to the map, find out how to contribute to Book Drum here.
Q: What is Book Drum and who is it for?
Book Drum is a web community for book lovers. It provides a convenient facility for readers to bring their favourite books alive for others by adding images, music, maps, background information and video.
Q: What does Book Drum offer that other book sites don't?
Most book websites do one of two things: they sell books or they assemble reviews & literary analysis. Book Drum provides a facility for reviews, but that's a tiny fraction of its potential. We're more interested in all the extra information, images, video and audio files that bring a book alive. Book Drum is the only website that provides a mechanism for readers to upload or embed multi-media content to illustrate and augment a book.
Q: Authors write books just the way they want them. Why do you need to add to them?
That's not necessarily true: who knows what Dickens and Austen might have come up with if they'd had the riches of the Internet at their disposal? And even contemporary authors are constrained by the conventional assumptions of book publishing. Including colour images in a printed book is very costly, and standard books have no facility for moving images or sound. So we hope authors will welcome this new opportunity to add context and illustration to their books, or to see their admirers do it for them. http://www.bookdrum.com/ |

three cutting-edge collaborative exhibitions celebrate nwsa 25th anniversary
NWSA / WET HEAT: "HOTBED" AND "A PIECE OF ME" NWSA / CASALIN: "RAPTURE: THE DAY AFTER"
Miami - In celebration of its 25th anniversary, New World School of the Arts' visual arts division has leaped into Art Basel mode with three ground-braking cutting-edge exhibitions. In collaboration with WET HEAT, NWSA will present two shows simultaneously: HOTBED MIAMI 2011, a performance-based exhibition, and A PIECE OF ME an interpretative collection of installations. As in years past, NWSA has also joined CASALIN to present RAPTURE: THE DAY AFTER in the luscious gardens of The Yard at Casalin, the recognized urban garden exhibition site that has become one of the first stops for arts enthusiasts during the Wynwood showings.
Exhibition Details:
- HOTBED MIAMI 2011: Thursday, December 1st - Sunday, December 4. NWSA Artseen Gallery. 2215 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami.
- A PIECE OF ME: Thursday, December 1st - Sunday, December 4. NWSA Artseen Gallery. 2215 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami.
- RAPTURE: THE DAY AFTER: Thursday, December 1st - Sunday, December 4. Yard at Casalin. 55 NW 30 Street, Miami. Opening Reception, December 1, 10:00 AM - 12:00 noon.
All exhibitions are free and open to the public. Information at 305-237-3649
"These three exhibitions give us the opportunity to showcase the work of our current high school and college students during the pivotal Art Basel season, where all eyes are on Miami," commented Maggy Cuesta, dean of the visual arts division at New World School of the Arts. "Moreover, it is important that we highlight the important role that our alumni play in the lives of these students. As mentors, collaborators, and peers, our alumni continue to come back to share the knowledge, experience and insight they have acquired over the years. It is precisely this coming together of the arts and minds that enables us to celebrate 25th years of artistic success."
HOTBED MIAMI 2011 showcases the talents of four art students whose mission is to engage the viewer through purely ephemeral creations. In this challenge, each student must conceive, plan and produce a one-day only performative installation - each to be presented consecutively. Every artist participating in "Hotbed Miami 2011" must install overnight, present their piece to actively engage the crowds of viewers the following show day, and strike their piece immediately afterward to make room for the next artist's work.
A PIECE OF ME is an annual multi-modal exhibition of visual conversations between established artists and art students. Across a generation, an artist's work speaks to nascent artists. In its inaugural 2011 presentation, "A Piece of Me" exhibits a prominent artwork from four renowned alumni of New World School of the Arts, and showcases a new, commissioned-work response to those pieces from four NWSA visual arts high school students. Each of the four "A Piece of Me" students will choose one of the four significant artworks of their predecessors in a one-to-one engagement of ideas and forms, but with a very specific modal challenge: their creative response must be in the form of a video art piece / installation. The prescribed electronic format of this challenge emphasizes the student's idea and its manifestation through distinct contrast to the established original (the alumni artworks will not include video work). Showcased alumni include Hernan Bas, Jen Stark, Loriel Beltran, and Michael Vasquez.
RAPTURE: THE DAY AFTER.A series of installations have been designed to illustrate what the end of the world might look like after the Rapture. With a wide range of works from ten NWSA faculty and alumni, the show illustrates this theme through creature-like animals reminiscent of what the world might be after this epic event. Levine's clusters are an infestation of twelve non-native spices of small mammal-like animal whose fluorescent colors offers stark contradiction of their sleep or dead-like posture. What are these creatures and what is happening with them? A surrealist approach is taken by Mones through his life-size "sheep", while Michael Loveland offers guests palpable realism with his coveted sculptures of caged life fauna. Among the artists that will be showcased at Casalin are COOPER, Loriel Beltran, Fred Snitzer, Jessica Laino, Asher Mones, Joshua Levine, Michael Loveland, Christina Gast, Cynthia Cruz and Alejandro Contreras.
About NWSA: A Florida center of excellence in the visual and performing arts, NWSA provides a comprehensive program of artistic, creative and academic development through a curriculum that reflects the rich multicultural state of Florida. With programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art, Dance, Music and Theater, NWSA offers four-year BFA and BM college degrees, as well as the high school diploma. Through its rigorous curriculum and conservatory-style teaching NWSA empowers its students to become leaders in the arts. At New World School of the Arts, visual arts students are able to explore and develop their personal artistic and aesthetic vision while being guided by a dynamic and distinguished faculty who are all practicing artists. Through disciplined training in traditional and new media, students also develop new skills and refine others while gaining invaluable understanding of the roles of art and design in society. Areas of concentration in visual arts include Drawing, Electronic Media, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture.
New World School of the Arts (NWSA) was created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts, is an educational partnership of Miami Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida.

Three famous Mexican women - Sor (Sister) Juana Inés de la Cruz, Frida Kahlo and Rosario Castellanos - will be present through a masterful rendition by actress Ofelia Medina in "Mexican Voices" , and, attendees will also be able to enjoy "The Child Death, a ritual poem" , a magnificent gala concert directed and composed by Jesús Echevarría, accompanied by the Carlos Chávez quartet and world class guest musicians.
A wide spectrum of music from Veracruz, son huasteco, melodies from Michoacán, Chilean rhythms, Tabasco drums and folk guitars will also contribute a cheerful beat to the party and bring young and old to their feet to dance, while Jaramar´s extraordinary voice, accompanied by greatly experienced musicians, will bring us the gift of her song in a special concert.
Plays, dancing, painting, sculpture and chocolate exhibits; visits to the cemetery, visual arts, a ball game, pre-Hispanic dances, clown theater, a children's and young people's pavilion, and many artists and exhibitors, will be awaiting with a great variety of activities during four days of celebration.
