executive director's message

Dear ,

Greetings members and friends!

Heard of Angry Birds app game?  In the game, players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed on or within various structures, with the intent of destroying all the pigs on the playfield. As players advance through the game, new birds appear, some with special abilities that can be activated by the player. This October has been an Angry Birds gaming kind of month with so many moving parts, exciting opportunities and deadlines coming, going, gone.

The majority of our membership has renewed with many new schools and organizations represented. Our student talent recognition program has launched, and any applicant will have a forever online portfolio to maintain for his or her college and professional life. The master series, highlighting happenings in member schools, is created, directed and edited by and for arts students. This coming week our board of directors meet for a strategic planning work session at New Orleans Center for the Arts Riverfront. And by year's end, our annual conference will be in full prep throttle, packed with knowledge and performance exchanges of the highest caliber. I'm feeling kind of cagey and am ready, aiming and firing full speed ahead! Thank you for your collective contributions so that we may all get the highest scores.

NCCAS is committed to developing next generation standards that will build on the foundation created by the 1994 document (and the 2005 dance standards), support the 21st-century needs of students and teachers, help ensure that all students are college and career ready, and affirm the place of arts education in a balanced core curriculum.

Each discipline writing team will include a balance of members across specific areas of expertise, geography, diversity and experience.

future of music coalition (fmc)

future of music

FMC is conducting an online survey from Sept 6-Oct 28, 2011 to gather crucial information about the ways that U.S.-based musicians and composers are currently generating income from songs, recordings or performances, and how this has changed over the past five years.

Click here to take survey now!

FMC urges U.S.-based musicians and composers who are 18 years of age or older to participate in this online survey. Your participation is both voluntary and anonymous. There are no questions that identify you as an individual, and your data will be aggregated with thousands of other musicians.

By participating in this survey, you are contributing to something much bigger than simply providing us with some information about your life and musical work; the results will provide a rich snapshot of the complex nature of being a musician in the 21st century.

We will be sharing the data with organizations, advocates and musicians nationwide in 2012, and it will help us to ensure that policymakers and consumers understand the financial realities of musicians today.

video games blog

video game blog

September 26, 2011

From Guest Blogger John Kollmer, Video Game Extraordinaire

Gone are the days when video games were merely a form of entertainment and a bane to every parent's attempt to get their kid to do their homework. Today, students of all ages can apply their love of gaming to prepare for 21st century careers. You can explore climate patterns and outer space, learn about the government and international relations, and even propose plans for saving the planet's expendable resources - all through video games.

Video games are a constantly evolving medium. Each new generation of gaming consoles and video processors brings more realistic graphics and physics that mimic the real world. Beyond the fun of the finished product, a tremendous amount of work goes into developing a game, and huge teams of people have a hand in creating the best-selling titles that we see on store shelves and in TV commercials. Every production team is made up of creative writers and story editors, programmers and modelers who shape the world, and artists and designers to put it all together and bring it to life. Video games are at the apex of collaborative work and hold a unique place in the world because, at their core, they blend the very best of art and science.

Here at the Alliance, we encourage you to try your hand at making you own games and submitting them to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Our recently added category for video game design offers a great opportunity for to explore the many tools available for making games. Check out Eline's Ludo Dojo for some inspiration!

Not only could your original video game designs possibly win you coveted awards and scholarships from the Alliance, they might also help you win the science fair this year! Our friends at Science Buddies offer plenty of video and computer game projects to get you started, as well as future career ideas should the idea of being a prominent innovator appeal to you!

Games may always be a welcome distraction from homework, but exceedingly they offer a chance to learn by doing and exploring in ways that ignite passion and excitement. If we jump at these opportunities, they'll continue to open academic doors for the future generations.

oakland school of the arts consults with meditation master thich nhat hanh

donn tnh statue

At the September 2011 unveiling of Remember Them, a massive public sculpture installation across the street from ASN member school, The Oakland School for the Arts (Oakland, Ca.), renowned Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh met with California Governor Jerry Brown, OSA CEO Donn Harris and city officials. Hanh was one of the subjects portrayed in sculptor Mario Chiodo's epic work that highlights historical figures associated with peace and human rights movements. During his visit, the Buddhist master advised school officials on the use of non-denominational meditation and focused silence to reduce conflict in schools and increase the capacity of children to learn. ancient art supplies found in south african cave

october 13, 2011 washington associated press

Researchers in South Africa have discovered what may have been the world's earliest artist's studio. A 100,000-year-old workshop used to mix and store the reddish pigment ochre has been discovered in Blombos Cave on the rugged southern coast near Cape Town. At the same site, scientists have found some of the earliest sharp stone tools, as well as evidence of fishing.

red ochreThe latest find is reported in Friday's edition of the journal Science. It includes pieces of ochre, grinding bowls, shells for storage and bone and charcoal to mix with the pigment.

Lead researcher Christopher Henshilwood of the University of Bergen, Norway, said the find represents an important benchmark in the evolution of complex human mental processes.

The ochre could have been used for painting, decoration and skin protection, according to the researchers.

shell bowlThe discovery shows that even at that time "humans had the conceptual ability to source, combine and store substances that were then possibly used to enhance their social practices."

Two separate tool kits for working ochre were found at the site, the researchers said.

Henshilwood, who is also affiliated with the South Africa's University of Witwatersrand, said in a statement that researchers believe that pieces of ochre were rubbed on rock to make a fine red powder, and that was mixed with crushed bone, charcoal, stone chips and a liquid. The mixture was put into abalone shells and stirred with a bone.
