at the end of the day, give us a quote
Shakespeare, Hamlet Act 3, scene 1, 114-121
Hamlet:
I did love you once.
Ophelia: Indeed, my lord, you made me believe so.
Hamlet: You should not have believ'd me, for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it. I lov'd you not.
Ophelia: I was the more deceiv'd.
Hamlet: Get thee to a nunn'ry, why woulds't thou be a breeder of sinners?

| executive director's message | | |
Dear ,
Greetings members and friends!

Tropical Storm Ophelia is floating towards the USA--just one of many natural phenomena closing out September and pulling us into October. I recently read that many of the pumpkin crops in the northeast were slaughtered by Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene. This was the same week/weekend Arts Schools Network intended to hold a planning meeting at NYC Steinhardt. Of course the meeting was cancelled, The League of Broadway cancelled their shows, basically all of NYC shut down except for pubs and churches, both for shelter. I'm still trying to get a refund for my Book of Mormon and War Horse tickets.
Some connections and resources come to us welcomed and unexpected while others we have to fend off. Will we, won't we, will we, won't we, will we join the dance? The Arts Schools Network board of directors will be convening October 27 and 28 at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts Riverfront to strategically plot short- and not-so- short-range plans.
So between now and then, we are buzzing about our new programs, Life in the Arts Master Series and On Your Way Student Talent Recognition Program. Deadlines for our awards and exemplary school programs are October 15. Then, countdown to the January 2012 conference. So alot is going to be happening for all of us. Let's stay connected through this harvest moon.

Sincerely,
Kristy Callaway
Executive Director

| american is to join the bolshoi ballet | | |

By ALASTAIR MACAULAY and DANIEL J. WAKIN
Published: September 20, 2011
Exactly 50 years after Rudolf Nureyev grabbed the world's attention as the first major Soviet dancer to defect to the West, another symbolic journey is taking place - this time in reverse.
David Hallberg, a principal dancer with American Ballet Theater, is becoming the first American star to enlist permanently with the fabled Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow. Mr. Hallberg, 29, who was born in Rapid City, S.D., will hold the coveted status of premier, the Bolshoi term for principal dancer, even as he continues performing with Ballet Theater.
"Personally, I feel a sense of responsibility as an American," Mr. Hallberg said on Tuesday, adding that he was proud to join such a historic company. "I will be bringing something different to the company, but I will also be respecting their traditions as well."
He said he was aware of the unique responsibility entailed in being a first. "There will be people watching," he said. "I have to do it justice."

fall art picks: architecture

This fall the architecture world will whipsaw between past and present, looking back at postwar Southern California (thanks to Pacific Standard Time) and the postmodern movement even as a batch of new museums get ready to open.
It is a group of seasonal offerings that reflect the state of the profession, to be sure. Credit remains tight for commercial and civic projects, for the most part, which means that there is plenty of time for retrospective analysis - and that completed buildings continue to get outsize attention.
So do proposed ones with any sort of momentum: Farmers Field, the planned football stadium in downtown Los Angeles, is a case in point.
Sympathetic Seeing: Esther McCoy and the Heart of American Modernist Architecture and Design, Sept. 28-Jan. 8, 2012 As part of Pacific Standard Time, the MAK Center in West Hollywood mounts an overdue tribute to McCoy, the architecture critic and historian who helped define California modernism for a broad audience. MAK Center at the Schindler House, 835 N. Kings Road, West Hollywood. www.makcenter.org
West Hollywood Public Library, Oct. 1 The Los Angeles architects MDA Johnson Favaro open their most prominent project to date, an ambitious new library in the shadow of Cesar Pelli's Pacific Design Center. Featuring large-scale public art by Shepard Fairey and others. 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood. www.weho.org
OMA/Progress, Oct. 6-Feb. 19, 2012 A major exhibition in London charts the career and influence of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, the firm co-founded by Rem Koolhaas in 1975. The show is curated by Rotor, a talented young Belgian design collective. Barbican Art Gallery, London. www.barbican.org.uk
Imperfect Health, Oct. 25-April 1, 2012 Canada's leading museum of architecture and design examines the links between urban design and public health, searching for ways that architects can help tackle obesity, asthma and other ailments. Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal. www.cca.qc.ca
Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Nov. 11 Alice Walton, an heir to the Wal-Mart fortune, opens a major showcase for her collection of American art in the company's hometown of Bentonville, Ark. The 201,000-square-foot museum, by the suddenly quite prolific Boston architect Moshe Safdie, is made up of a series of wings spanning a ravine and grouped around a pair of ponds. www.crystalbridges.org
Reconsidering Postmodernism, Nov. 11-12 Heavy hitters of the po-mo movement - including Michael Graves, Leon Krier and Robert A.M. Stern - gather in New York for a two-day look back. CUNY Graduate Center, 365 5th Ave., New York. (212) 730-9646, Ext. 104.

| 10 salient studies on the arts in education | | |
september 6, 2011
A fine arts education - including music, theater, drawing, painting, or sculpture - whether in practice or theory, has been a part of any well-rounded curriculum for decades. But that may be changing. Many schools today are cutting back on or eliminating their art programs due to budget constraints. It is estimated that by the end of this year, more than 25 percent of public high schools will have completely dismantled them. These stats aren't just bad news for teachers working in the arts. Numerous studies done over the past decade have demonstrated the amazing benefits of such an integral education facet. Students who don't have access to art classes may not only miss out on a key creative outlet, but might also face greater difficulty mastering core subjects, higher dropout rates and more disciplinary problems.
You don't have to take our word for it - you can read the studies yourself. Here, we've listed some of the biggest on the arts in education conducted over the past decade. Taken on by research organizations, college professors and school districts themselves, the studies reveal the power of art to inspire, motivate and educate today's students. And, of course, demonstrate what a disservice many schools are doing by undervaluing such an integral part of their education and development.
