The Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts was founded in 1989 as the premier arts high school in the School District of Palm Beach County, the nation's eleventh largest school district, serving a county geographically larger than Rhode Island or Delaware.
Originally known as the Palm Beach County School of the Arts and located on the northern shore of Lake Mangonia, the name of the school changed in 1997 when local arts philanthropist Alexander W. Dreyfoos, founder of Photo Electronics Corporation, made the single largest private contribution to a public school in Florida. This generous contribution coincided with the school's much-anticipated move to the newly renovated, historic Central Schools campus in downtown West Palm Beach.

The school's location in downtown West Palm Beach places it in the heart of Palm Beach County's cultural landscape. Just across Iris Street is the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, and within a few blocks are the Norton Museum of Art, the Armory Art Center, Palm Beach Dramaworks, the Cuillo Center for the Arts, and the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden. Opportunities are bountiful for students to participate in the local cultural community.

| president's message | | |
Dear ,
I'd like to congratulate you on another extraordinary year with Arts Schools Network. Your talent, dedication and passion are what continue to make ASN such a unique and thriving organization.
We enjoyed an exciting board retreat this summer at the Denver School of the Arts and look forward to the fall meeting at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. We are also in full swing in the planning of our "Art WORKS: Making the Magic Happen" annual conference in Orlando, Florida, January 23-29, 2012. We've lined up a very rich week of content including school site visits, cultural field studies, member best practices discussions and workshops with Disney's creative team, among many other exciting activities and seminars. Please mark your calendars for what is sure to be an enlightening and inspiring week.
I am very pleased to welcome the following new members to the Arts Schools Network Board: Douglas Ashcraft, Idyllwild Arts; Jackie Collins, Idaho Arts Charter; Terri Milsap, ChiArts; William Kohut, Denver School of the Arts; and Scott Rudes, Orange Grove Middle School. We know each will bring tremendous insight and leadership to the organization.
ASN is working with an organization called ArtsApp to launch a new student recognition program called "On Your Way." ArtsApp is a tool that modernizes the media submission and application process to help artists and arts organizations communicate more effectively. The "On Your Way" program will provide students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to display their work and receive recognition for their talents and achievements in filmmaking, musical theatre and voice.
ASN's most important and longstanding priorities are to provide meaningful services to our membership and foster collaboration between our member schools and the arts community. I encourage you to continue bringing innovative relationships and partnerships to Arts Schools Network so that we may keep our terrific momentum building and membership growing.
I look forward to seeing the Arts Schools Network family in Orlando!

new orleans center for the creative arts
launches culinary arts & full day academic studio program
| | |
After years of careful planning, two highly anticipated programs have finally launched at NOCCA: Culinary Arts and the Academic Studio.
Emeril Lagasse Foundation funded four years of Culinary Arts training offered through NOCCA's Summer Session, and at long last, the year-round program is kicking off this fall. NOCCA's new, on-site kitchen -- the Emeril Lagasse Foundation Culinary Arts Studio -- was completed in March, and Chef Dana D'Anzi Tuohy along with Master Chef-in-Residence Frank Brigtsen welcomed the first 30 year-round culinary arts students this week.
The new curriculum, designed with Johnson & Wales University, is rich, layered, intense and unique, just like the region's cultural heritage. The curriculum will cover core skills, history, regional, national and international cuisine, nutrition, kitchen and house management, critique and communications skills, creative and personal aesthetics, presentation, real-world applications and expectations, and a thorough understanding of excellence in the culinary arts.
"If any city and state in the country is going to have the first comprehensive high school culinary arts-training conservatory, it should be New Orleans and Louisiana," said NOCCA President and CEO Kyle Wedberg. "And now we do."
The Academic Studio has been a dream for even longer. As the name implies, the Academic Studio provides instruction in math, science, and the humanities, allowing students to attend NOCCA for the entire school day -- a first! Academic Studio students avoid the hassle of transferring to NOCCA over the lunch period or at the end of the school day, and early feedback from students is that it's a huge success. idyllwild alumni trevor hall releases new video

Be The Change - Luminaries feature Trevor Hall, directed by Mikki Willis & Ryan Reeves

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZ9gZLW1kvM
http://www.facebook.com/trevorhall
Trevor Hall Bio - Born in South Carolina and raised in California, Trevor Hall developed an affinity for summery acoustic music, from the beachside ambiance of Jack Johnson to the leisurely stroll of Bob Marley. Having spent his teenage years at a boarding school for the arts, Hall dedicated his life to music upon his high-school graduation. He self-released Lace Up Your Shoes in 2004; two years later, the teenaged Hall prepared for his major-label debut with Geffen Records. The Rascals Have Returned, an introductory EP produced by John Alagía, featured a soothing mix of reggae, folk, and roots rock. Sales were slow, however, and Geffen dropped Hall from their roster in 2008.
Hall continued to tour, performing shows alongside the likes of Ben Harper, Matisyahu, and the Wailers. He also returned to the studio to record a self-titled sophomore album, which emphasized the artist's reggae influences upon its release in 2009. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi

chicago academy of the arts installs new dance floors
| | |
When dance students return to CAA in the fall, they'll have a greater spring in their steps, thanks to a generous contribution from the Service Club of Chicago. Through a Service Club grant, new sprung-wood floors with Marley covering were installed in our dance studios.
The Service Club of Chicago is a charitable organization of women, which has continually served the welfare, civic, educational and cultural needs of Chicago and surrounding communities since 1890. CAA has been a beneficiary since 2000, and in that time, the Service Club also funded the purchase of music and sound equipment, computers, and science equipment for the school.

orange county high school of the arts
in top 10 california charter school ranking | | |

A USC report has named Orange County High School of the Arts as one of the 10 best charter schools in California. http://www.ocsarts.net
The fifth annual USC School Performance Dashboard released by the university's Center on Educational Governance ranked the Santa Ana campus as the seventh best charter out of more than 800 statewide.
The top charter schools were chosen based on academic ratings - including an index based on various state test scores - and school productivity indicators that rate a school's academic success based on its per-student spending, the report's authors said.
"It's a way to take the data collected for accountability purposes and transform it into information that will help parents, teachers and investors," said lead author Priscilla Wohlstetter, director of the Center on Educational Governance.
