A.H.A.V.A.'s Writing Contest 2012 has begun!
Dear Parents,
 
In this last stretch of the school year we are also s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g  your child's writing muscles!  Please click here to read this article to understand  the importance of writing skills. Especially from the 3rd grade and up, we work very hard in this area.

All projects will be displayed at the Academic Fair on Tuesday, June 5th, in Mitzpeh Yericho. (Save the date, details will follow.)

Please note the following rules: 

  1. Points are awarded for neatness, originality, spelling, grammar, effort and timeliness. It is not enough for an entry to be terrific - if it is late or handed in on something dirty or crumpled you will lose points. 
  2. Each entry must be complete. If it is missing part of what was requested, you will lose points.
  3. The judges take the level of the student into consideration, not just the age.
  4. There will be separate prizes for the higher and lower level entries. Usually this means grades 3-5, and 6-8, although it might change depending on the level of the work entered.
  5. Prizes will be as follows:            Higher level:        1st - 100 shekels, 2nd - 50 shekels,   3rd -20 shekels      Lower level:       1st - Bananagrams Game, 2nd - 50 NIS Steimatsky voucher,  3rd -25 shekel voucher at Shaki Toy store in Ma'aleh Adumim

 

To receive the prize one must be at the Academic Fair on Tuesday, June 5th.

A person can be called a hero because of some tremendous achievements of bravery, loyalty, courage, nobility, selflessness, etc...Heroes can be found in history or current events; in the

hero

field of medicine, sports, education politics, faith - the sciences or humanities. Judaism and Israel is full of heroes and

 heroics.  This year's theme of Heroism will give you a chance to explore some of them.

ENTRY1
Entry #1: ESSAY  Due by April 29th 

Tell about one heroic act that you admire.

 

Sample questions: (You can use all or some of these. These are guidelines only.) 

  1. What is the heroic act?
  2. When did it happen?
  3. What caused it to happen?
  4. What did the hero need to do?
  5. Could anyone else have done this?
  6. Do you think that you could do this?
  7. What do you admire about it?
  8. In what field did this heroic act take place?
ENTRY2
Entry #2: DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH  Due by May 9th

 

A hero needn't be one who does extraordinary acts. Often there are people who are heroes because of ordinary daily acts that they do, or they become heroes by a simple act.

Make a list 15 adjectives and/or adverbs that can describe everyday heroes. Use as many of them as possible in one or two paragraphs to describe aneveryday hero of your choice.

Entry #3: POEM  Due May 20th  

Write an acrostic poem about your choice of a modern hero from the past 20 years. Use the letters of the word HEROISM to form theacademic fair acrostic. Each line should describe a characteristic of your hero, or his act of heroism.

Entry #4: ART PROJECT  Due May 30th

 

You will receive a quilt patch to decorate in any style you like. The decoration can represent either a particular or general act of heroism. You can put in a phrase or sentence if you like.

It must be accompanied by one paragraph that explains what it symbolizes, how it represents what it does, and why you chose to do this.

Please use fabric paints, or markers,

embroidery or applique - but not something likely to fall off. After sewing the individual patches into small quilts we will be donating them to the needy.
