Summer update
August 2011

A.H.A.V.A. is a non-profit organization committed to promoting English Literacy in Israel.

Gaila

Greetings!

Each year our students produce a wonderful feast of work for our June Academic Fair.

We also display all the entries from the Writing Contest. This year's theme was Beginnings.

The entries - interviews, artwork and poetry - were mind boggling. It wowed me to read about all these amazing 'Beginnings' that people have experienced, and are doing, while also feeling extremely priviledged to have these students in our school.

You will be able to partake of the tiniest bit of what we enjoyed through the pictures and some wonderful entries we included in this newsletter.

Be proud of them with us!

Summer Reading Log   What are A.H.A.V.A.'s students doing this summer?

We hope they are R-E-A-D-I-N-G! to fill up their Reading Logs.

Once our students have recorded titles, authors and a short sentence about their 10 books, they are entitled to choose a prize. Great prizes are waiting for them already!

2011 Writing Contest - Poetry

Beginnings

"It's the first step the baby walks,

It's the first time the baby talks,

It's the first day at his new school,

It's his Bar Mitzvah at the shul,

It's the first time he's holding a gun,

It's the first time he loves someone,

It's his first day at his new job,

It's his first time that over his son he'll sob.

It's his first grandchild, what a celebration,

It's his last day on this world, BEGINNING a generation."

What would Haman answer to that?

Interviews - Writing Contest 2011
You won't believe WHO our students interviewed!

  • Many interviewed their parents & grandparents about their Aliyah or a business they founded. Even I was interviewed by one of our fourth graders! One grandmother, when asked how long it took her to get used to Israel, responded with 'I still haven't"... For better or for worse, that sentiment reflects my own.
  • Did you know that we teach several grandchildren of the man who invented the first calculator? Back in 1966 - it sold for a merely $995!
  • A student from Kfar Adumim asked her father why he is developing a non-invasive test for kids with gastro problems. She found out it was because kids do not like doing a colonoscopy.
  • Another student's uncle is involved in developing an important vaccine for celiac children read more...

Our students interviewed people who started business in the field of health, management, medicine, banking, education, coaching - you name it!

Just imagine 20 years from now... Our current students will be interviewed by others about their amazing accomplishments!...

A.H.A.V.A.'s goal is to give them the tools to be able to do so and soar!
