A.H.A.V.A.'s READING, what about you?
February
1st week of the read-a-thon 2011

Greetings!

Read-a-thon 2011 has begun!! And now the question is...why?!! Is it worth the effort?

Here is my answer. (and no, I am not biased at all....)

The Readathon is a tremendous tool with which to accomplish 2 goals for our children.

One: get our children reading. Scroll down to read an excerpt from reading specialist Sally Shaywitz. What she says there gives me the impetus to undertake this gigantic project each year.

Two: teach our children Tzedaka, and empathy for others. We can encourage them to 'read more in order to raise more' to help children less fortunate than themselves.

Don't let this tool pass you by!

And... read-a-thon 2011 is also about YOU!! read about the adult read-a-thon.

In advance I thank you all for the support we will get from  Read-a-thon 2011. This year donations can be made online for both American and Israeli sponsors.

Happy Reading!

What does Dr. Sally Shawitz (M.D.) think about read-a-thons?

An excerpt from her world renown book,

"Overcoming Dyslexia"

BOOKS

Learn some amazing facts that are relevant for all readers:

"A large vocabulary is a key element in facilitating reading comprehension; in turn, reading itself is a powerful influence in developing, a child's vocabulary. Indeed, it is difficult to overestimate the importance of reading to a child's intellectual growth. Reading researcher Keith Stanovich has emphasized how dependent a child's vocabulary is on reading. A child learns about seven new words a day, which amounts to a staggering

three thousand words a year. To acquire a new word for his vocabulary, a child must scrutinize the inner details of the word and not gloss over it. For the most part, analyzing each letter and letter group in a word is the only way an accurate stored representation is formed and the most effective means of having a new written word become part of the child's working vocabulary. read more...
