Welcome to A.H.A.V.A.Gaila

Greetings!

We have begun the year with lots of energy, new ideas and promise of success. I am excited to share with you updates from each classroom of what your children have been learning.

Wishing you a happy Hanukkah,
Gaila Cohen-Morrison

Lisa Weinsoff-Zenilman:
3rd Grade

has been moving ahead steadily since September.  There are two reading groups in the class, and all students have been progressing nicely.  We have also been concentrating on proper letter formation, and are about to begin learning about proper sentence writing.

4th Grade A began the year reading a biography of Houdini.  Students were excited about Houdini's life story, and about his tricks and escapades.  We then continued with the reader Bit by Bit, which we just completed!  We have also completed a unit on proper capitalization and punctuation.  After Chanukah, we will begin working in our new spelling books, continue moving forward with the next graded reader, Friends Aloft, and focus on grammar and sentence structure to improve writing skills.

4th Grade B is a new class, and the emphasis is on improving reading skills.  Students are working diligently, and we are very happy with the progress they are making.

5th Grade students are working in two reading groups.  The advanced group of students has just completed reading the biography of Ilan Ramon, and is looking forward to projects related to Ilan, the Air Force and/or fighter planes.  The other reading group is working in their reader, Friends Aloft, with an emphasis on improving their comprehension skills.  The reader is becoming the springboard for short writing assignments as the students begin to write summaries of their stories and short essays and compositions.  The class as a whole is reviewing grammar and sentence structure as we focus on enhancing writing skills.

6th Grade students are presently in the midst of a grammar and writing unit, focusing on writing complex sentences.  We are also reading a selection of short stories as preparation for writing short fiction.  Prior to this, the class read the biography of Ilan Ramon and wrote about his life.

7th Grade began the year reading the Ilan Ramon biography because it was simply not available last year.  Selections from the biography were excellent vehicles for writing assignments and enhancing vocabulary. The class is presently in the midst of a short unit on idioms, and writing using idioms.  After Chanukah, we will be reading selections from The Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

8th Grade curriculum is built around a series of short stories by renowned authors, such as O. Henry, Rudyard Kipling and Ray Bradbury.  The stories are read at home and in class, with more difficult portions read and discussed in class.  Writing assignments spring from the literature, and are then reviewed in class in a writing lab.

Kfar Adumim 2nd Grade/Rivka Aviad

We are continuing to read the white  booklets. Each booklet teaches a new phonetic topic. Homework reinforces what we learn in class so it is very important to spend time on homework in class. The white booklets are often accompanied with a short worksheet.
In addition we are working on our writing skills. The students copy something short from the board every day. Some time this month we will begin creative writing in the form of short compositions.

Mitzpe Yericho 1-2nd Grade/Rivka Aviad

We finished the colorful Beginning to Read books. Now we have begun working with the white booklets. Each booklet introduces a few new words. It is important to read the booklets at home with your child because this reinforces what we learned in class. I want to compliment you parents because the students all seem to be doing their reading at home. Often the booklets are accompanied with a worksheet. The worksheet teaches  many skills such as reading, following directions, and writing.
The class is also practicing letter formation in notebooks. Everyone is progressing nicely. If you haven't bought a notebook yet, now is the time.
Ma'ale Adumim Kindergarten/Batya Mirsky
We're in the middle of the 4th book. We've been emphasizing the first and last sounds of different
words. We're also learning to blend sounds in preparation for reading.

Ma'ale Adumim 1st Grade/Batya Mirsky

We've started the white booklets as well as reviewing the letters. The students are also learning
to give an oral book report.

Ma'ale Adumim 2nd Grade/Batya Mirsky

We're 8 booklets away from finishing the white booklets. We've also started writing compositions
and working on light spelling.

Ma'ale Adumim Differentiated Classroom (3-5th Grade)/Batya Mirsky, Yocheved Meyer (co-teachers), Mr. Harry Gluck (volunteer assistant)

Our differentiated classroom is coming along very well. With Yocheved Meyer as co-teacher and a great volunteer (Mr. Harry Gluck), the students are working in class very quickly and are really enjoying themselves. The many and varied activities in class target reading, comprehension and writing.

(2-5th grade)

/Gaila Cohen Morrison, Rivka Aviad (co-teachers),  Shira Gergi (assistant)

This class is an exciting adventure for everybody.
The 2nd graders and our other new students are adjusting to the tempo and the freedom to choose the 3-5 tasks they accomplish during each class. All but the oldest group spend time with phonics practice with Gaila each lesson. Via puzzles and games the children are working on sight word recognition. Many compositions have been composed - the kids are so creative! Each child is progressing under our guidance with reading skills as well.
Every child receives homework on their level - make sure to do it!

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers: Mrs. Malka & Mr. Avraham Shrybman, Mr. Harry Gluck, Mrs. Sylvia Schneider & Mrs. Gail Kranson
