Teacher's Evening With Ms. Renee Montaigne
A.H.A.V.A. teachers had a nice educational evening with Ms. Montaigne, a Special Education teacher and curriculum designer from the USA who donated her time here in Israel to give some great tips to our teachers. 10 teachers attended at the evening, adding ideas and teaching tips to the benefit of us all.
We would like to thank all the participants and Ms. Montaigne for the wonderful evening. We hope there will be more to come!

Summer Programs What are A.H.A.V.A.'s students doing this summer?
Summer Camp
With the help of two American teenage volunteers, a group of lucky Hebrew Speakers from Mitzpe Yericho enjoyed a 7-day afternoon camp, full of creativity, fun, and, of course - English! Using games and arts & crafts, these campers got to improve their English in July. When news of the camp reached a neighbouring community - they insisted that we run the same for them! So we had some 15 boys and girls who enjoyed our camp this summer!
Reading Log A.H.A.V.A. knows the importance of keeping children reading over the summer. At our Academic Fair each child receives a summer reading log with room to record 10 books. Participation is from age 3 and up, so even the younger siblings of our A.H.A.V.A. students can participate!

Dear Gaila,
Shall I send my second grader to English Class or Karate? He keeps complaining that he already knows
English and that it's not fair that his Hebrew speaking friends don't have to
go. After all, shouldn't after school
activities be just fun, social events?
Signed,
One Confused Parent
Dear Confused,
First off, you should know that I hear that complaint from
many younger students: 'but I already know English, why do I have to keep going
back?'. Show your child the books you read or a newspaper and ask if he
understands them. When he sheepishly shakes his head no, you can explain that
you're helping him get up to that level.
As for the financial aspect, if you can't afford both, then
this is the time to get creative! Ask grandparents, aunts or uncles, to help you
pay for the cost, emphasizing the importance of learning English in Israel. You'd
be surprised how happy your relatives will feel to help you out a bit and
support Israel
at the same time.
Good luck, Gaila
