This Newsletter will cover:
  1. How you can place text next to your pictures in your auction listings (for those that don't want the text just above and below).

Having Text on the Side of a Picture

The following is a request I received recently from a wonderful client who wants to help improve the presentation of his auction listings by putting text to the side of a product picture rather than above or below it:

Hello crystal, It's been a while since I talked with you. I have received your emails and I am anticipating use of some of your issues on advertising.  They look good.  But I am at this point trying to change the look of my listings.  But am having a bit of trouble with one task.

I would like to be able to write a text beside the picture but it keeps wanting to continue below the picture. I have tried using a blank picture and writing text into it and saving as a picture, but it just don't look right.  Is there a way one can write text to the side of a picture.  I can't find a way to insert a text box which is what I think I need, (but not sure).. I am resizing my pictures to a smaller size; I am trying for a more professional looking listing

   Thanks for any suggestions.

Hal at forever yours fine jewelry

Having text above or below a picture is by far the easiest and quickest way to list your products.  But most times that extra effort to make an auction look just right, is well worthwhile!  Here's a couple ways you can add text to the side of the picture.   Some will find one way easier than the otherdepending on if they're more comfortable with light html code work, or light picture editing.

#1.  You can add text directly to the image itself.

Please Note: I use Corel Drawl for most of my photo editing, so I'll use Corel Drawl for walking you through any photo editing instructions I may have.  Most photo editing software offers many of the same capabilities, such as copy, cut, paste, resize, add text. ect.  So it shouldn't be too difficult to catch on if you use different photo editing software.

·         Open your picture with your photo editing software

·         Be sure the picture is the size you want it to be shown as when viewed at 100%. So shrink it now if your picture is too big.  You can shrink it by clicking "image" then "resize. Then, try different resizing percentages such as 75% or 50%, until you get just the right size.  ( I don't recommend resizing a picture to be bigger using this same technique as it will make your picture fuzzy and ugly)

·         Now that your picture is the size you want it, we'll add a spot for adding text to the right or to the left of the picture, whichever side you most prefer.

·         Click "Image" Then click "Add Borders"

·         Choose right or left and add some size to your image here.

·         Make sure the other sides are at 0  (be sure the symmetric box is not clicked).  You may have to adjust this size several times to get it just right.

·         Now you have space in which you can add some text.

·         Notice the Text Tool on the left side bar that looks like an A.  Click this tool and decide where you want to add your text.

·         See the bar at the top now, you can make your text bold, change the font, align the text to the left, right, center, ect.  On the right you can choose what color you want the font to be.

·         Save your image with a new name by Clicking "file" and "save as"

·         Wa la!  You have an image with text on the side.

·         Note: it gets easier with practice and a ton of curiosity!  ;)

#2.  You can add text to the side of an image by adding a Table Code to your Auction Template.  The table will be invisible.  One side of the table will be for your image.  The other side of the table will be for your text.

1.       Find where you want to place a table in your auction and in that spot type in: AAAA

2.       Click on the HTML description code view

3.       Click somewhere in the code (but don't move or do anything else just yet)

4.       On your keyboard click the Control button and F at the same time  (this means you want to find something)

5.       A search box should appear, type in it "AAAA"

6.       It should take you right to the spot that you typed in AAAA

7.       with your mouse copy the following code:

Right Click "Select All" and "Copy" the Table Code Below

8.       go back to the html code in your ebay listing where your AAAA is highlighted.  With your right mouse button click "paste".  It should paste the table code right in the place where the AAAA's were.

9.       Now click the description box and find your table.

10.   If your background is a dark gray it may be little hard to find my text, but it's there so when you see my pictures, know that I have text to the right, that says "This is a great place to add a description of your product/image"

11.   Edit the text and images like you would when normally listing with an auction template.

12.   Wa'la!  You now have text designed professionally to the side of your images!

The Selling Power of a Good Title!

The Power of a Good Title!

It's amazing how a simple title effects a sale!  For instance, a new client of mine recently shared the following information about one of his cross necklaces:

"Actually we used to call this cross the "1st Responders Cross". Then we learned a lesson: The cops don't associate at all with the firemen -- and vice versa -- and the paramedics don't associate with either of them. So nobody bought the "1st Responder Cross". We renamed it the "Police, Firefighter and Paramedic Cross" and suddenly it started to sell."

Finding just the right title can be complicated and sometimes timely, but it is well worth the efforts in the long run.  Here is some valuable Do's and Don'ts that will help you come up with just the right title for your auction listing:

Title Do's:

  • Use as many descriptive keywords that clearly convey what you are selling.  (example shown below)
  • Ebay allows you up to 55 characters in the title, use them all if possible as it increases your auctions chance of being found in the search.
  • If your item is new, then put "NEW" in the title as many people look up this important keyword.
  • Include your item's brand name, artist, or designer name in the title, this is VERY important to 1000's of picky buyers.
  • Include item-specific attributes. For example, if selling shoes-include size, color and condition.
  • State exactly what your item is, even if your title repeats the category name.
  • Use correct spelling.
  • Use very little if any punctuation marks, asterisks and CAPS.

Example:

The only word in my title below that is NOT a widely used key word is "PROFESSIONAL".  All of the other words are key words that most people are searching for when searching for my type of service on ebay.

"PROFESSIONAL ebay Store, Website Web Design Logo Banner"

This title will get me found by those who are:  looking for a logo, looking for a website design, looking for an ebay store design, looking for an ebay logo banner.  Or all of the above!  So you can see this one title opens the door to a LARGE audience of searchers.  Much larger audience than if I would have just said "professional logo design" in the title.

I also suggest using a word or two and CAPs them just to make that part of the title stick out and grab the eye. If all of it is CAPS, it will seem like you're yelling at the viewer, which is annoying.  So, some CAPS and punctuation is good, just not much.  I would not suggest having two words that are CAPs side by side though as that quickly becomes annoying.  Either one word in CAPS in the title basically anywhere.  Or two at opposite ends of the title.

If you have something new, I would personally recommend CAPS the keyword NEW in your title, and not the others unless it's a big designer name, such as "NEW!  Large black leather Authentic COACH purse"  That way the NEW sticks out and catches the eye, so does the designers name (COACH).  Also, note, I put in the color and size in that description title..  Color and size is very important to many searchers.

Title Don'ts:

  • Try not to include "wow" or "look" in your title. Buyers don't search for words like these (and they look dumb and desperate.
  • "L@@K HERE!" is a fine example of what NOT to do - as it's desperately annoying.
  • Don't include Web site addresses, email addresses or phone numbers. The only exception to this rule is the sale of domain names.  (ebay will pull it if they find that you're doing this)
  • Don't worry about creating a grammatically correct sentence.  Focus on KEYWORDS not grammar.
  • Don't use ALL CAPS as again it will make people feel like they're being yelled at.

Editing Your Pictures Background - Getting Started

Please Note: I use Corel Drawl for most of my photo editing, so I'll use Corel Drawl for walking you through any photo editing instructions I may have.  Most photo editing software offers many of the same capabilities, such as copy, cut, paste. Resize. add text. ect.  So it shouldn't be too difficult to catch on if you use different photo editing software.  If you do find it difficult however, you may then consider purchasing a copy of Corel Drawl to follow my instructions with more ease.

The photo editing is easy, but it can be timely.  You'll save yourself the most time if you take your pictures with a solid color background... NOO bumpy white walls.. Bumps will make it harder to edit your image, and I want to help you make it easy.  So take a picture of your product with a SOLID background that is not the same color as the product.  The more opposite the background color is from your product, the better.

  1. ALWAYS Save a copy of the original picture in case you accidentally mess up the edited one, then at least the original will still be there if you do.  You can save a copy by clicking "File" then "SAVE AS" and give the image a new name. The original image will then be left unedited and you'll now be working on your copy image.
  2. Be sure the picture is the size you want it to be shown as when viewed at 100%. So shrink it now if your picture is too big.  You can shrink it by clicking "image" then "resize. Then, try different resizing percentages such as 75% or 50%, until you get just the right size.

Delete the Background of an Image You Want to List

  1. Now, delete the background of your image using the background eraser..  (see link "deleting background")
  2. After you've deleted all of the background, if you want to add a nice 3d shadow effect:
    1. Resize the canvas to be a little bigger.  You can resize by clicking "image" then "canvas size".  Then try adding an extra 0 or two 00's to it's current pixel sizes. just be sure it's bigger than what you currently have.
  3. Recommended step, but not essential:  It's always good to keep multiple copies of your work in stages, so after you delete the background of your image save the picture with a new name and save it as a png file (so that it keeps it's transparent background).  Do this one more time so you have 1 more copy so the png image is not ruined by an editing mistake. (it will save you some steps if you later decide you want to put the image on different backgrounds).  You can give it different names such as picture-PNG1, picture-PNG2. ect.. whatever helps you the most remember what it is that you're doing with the picture.
  4. Now with your picture, add the shadow background for the 3d effect (see link "drop shadow")
  5. Save your work.

To Place the image on a colored background of your choice

  1. Cut the picture out of the canvas (see link "cut picture")
  2. See link pick a color
  3. See link paint bucket new color
  4. See link put picture back on top
  5. Finally Save Your picture with a new name, this time using JPG or JPEG instead of png  (png is great for photo editing, but not really good for publishing online)
  6. Wa La you're done, now you have deleted a background and added a nice shadow effect to your product image!  Congratulations!

How to put your image on top of another image, for instance if you put a picture of you in a picture of Hawaii, so that it looks like you're in Hawaii having fun!  (Hint, you open the picture of the background you want such as Hawaii, and paste the PNG image you just edited, such as a picture of you with the transparent background, and wa'la, you're now in Hawaii!)

Okay there might be a little more to it than that, but I think you have a good step forward in the right direction!  ;)
