BREAKING NEWS:

CHATHAM Chronicle 9/13/2012---

A finished walking trail may soon be under construction behind the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, courtesy of a local Eagle Scout candidate.

Last week, Elijah Eldredge went before the board of selectmen seeking approval for the plan, which includes a 640-foot trail to the top of the hill, with benches for people to enjoy "a nice view of Stillwater Pond," he said. The trail will follow the terrain, and will involve minimal clearing, Eldredge said.

The Marconi Center already voted its support of the project, and Chatham Bars Inn has pledged to purchase two benches; selectmen gave their unanimous approval, and the idea now goes before the Eagle Board of Review. If approved, it could be complete before next May, Eldredge said.

CMMC Celebrating
 the Chatham
300th Anniversary.
Greetings!

Chatham Marconi Maritime Center is headed for another banner year in 2012! The number of our visitors is poised to break 2011's mark of 3000. Visit us during the shoulder season or arrange a group visit to enjoy the new exhibit on Titanic and watch a short video about the connection between the sinking of the "Queen of the Sea" and Chatham Radio WCC. Be sure to visit our museum shop for an excellent selection of CMMC apparel and books for your family and friends.

A sincere thank you to all who have visited us and a special thanks to our dedicated volunteers who staffed the museum in 2012. We hope we can count on you again next year. As CMMC continues to grow, we look forward to welcoming more volunteers in 2013.

The fundraising event was a great success and everyone enjoyed the music, drinks and food, even the speeches!

Thank you so much for participating.  We count on you to keep the Marconi spirit alive.

Thank You, Greatest Generation Member,

Henry Stamps

If you have visited CMMC's Navy exhibit or seen the video, Chatham Radio Goes to War, you have heard Henry Stamps introduce himself and tell how Chatham Navy radiomen listened for radio transmissions from German submarines during World War II. The Navy eavesdroppers intercepted Morse code signals, encrypted by the Enigma machine, and relayed them to Washington, DC, where they were decrypted with the Bombe, a forerunner of the modern computer.

CMMC's Navy exhibit committee first met Henry Stamps via email. He volunteered to help us with the exhibit from his home in Virginia. Henry was among the Navy radiomen who arrived in Chatham in 1942 to open the listening station here, and later was assigned to the Greenland station of the direction-finding network. After the war, he worked as a civilian at Naval Security Group Headquarters in Washington, DC, and at the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, MD.

Henry died on April 24, 2012, after a short illness. His wife of 65 years, Mary Vallastro Stamps, his daughter Marilyn, his son-in-law, and his grandson survive him.

World War II buffs will be interested in an article Henry wrote several years ago that can be found on the CMMC website.

MY WORLD WAR II CAREER IN THE NAVY

Henry B. Stamps (W3PKL) 203 Lake Ridge Drive Forest, Va. 24551

On Sunday December 7, 1941, I was enjoying a Coca-Cola and eating peanuts at the company store of a mining company in Monterey, TN. It was there that I heard the news that Pearl Harbor had been bombed by Japan. I was almost seventeen years of age at that time. I hardly knew where Pearl Harbor was but it was clear to me that we were at war. The following week several of my friends and I made a trip to the county seat to obtain information and papers to enlist in the navy. I filled out all the forms however there was just one little problem: my parents would have to falsify my age. I was able to convince my father but convincing my mother was another story. She would have no part in falsifying my age and sending her baby off to war!   Click here to read the rest.
