CMMC Celebrating
 the Chatham
300th Anniversary.
Greetings!

CMMC remembered the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic as a turning point in the history of maritime radio during the weekend of April 12-15. A new exhibit highlighted the people and events that surrounded the tragedy. Ham radio enthusiasts worked their radios around the clock throughout the weekend. An overflow crowd at the Chatham Community Center saw the premier showing of a new video written by Ed Fouhy and produced by Ed Fouhy and Chris Seufert about the life of Matt Tierney, a former operator at WCC.

Plan to visit us this summer and bring your friends to see CMMC's many new features and exhibits!

CMMC HOSTS KM1CC, TITANIC ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EVENT

"CQ, CQ CQ Titanic Special Event, this is KM1CC, Kilo Mike One Charlie Charlie." So began the Amateur Radio Special Event held at CMMC to commemorate the sinking of the Titanic. The special event was a cooperative effort between CMMC and the National Seashore. The National Seashore's Barbara Dougan, amateur radio call sign N2NS, recruited operators from all around Massachusetts and neighboring states. Both radiotelephone and Morse code were used, though code was emphasized in honor of the operators whose messages brought the Carpathia to the aid of the stricken vessel.

Over 500 visitors to CMMC observed and talked with the radio operators as they contacted more than 75 countries. In all, more than 2300 stations were contacted including several other special event stations some overseas. The amateur radio operators contacted had the opportunity to learn about CMMC and the Titanic event. Operators who want a postcard (called a QSL card) acknowledging their on-the-air contact will send a self addressed stamped envelope with their QSL card to a "QSL Manager" at CMMC who will send back a special commemorative QSL.

See the CMMC website for pictures and videos of the event.

FILM TRIBUTE TO TITANIC DISASTER WIRELESS OPERATORS

"The Titanic, Matt Tierney and Marconi's Marvelous Invention"

By Ed Fouhy

To mark the centennial of the Titanic tragedy, CMMC commissioned new exhibits as well as a new film, "The Titanic, Matt Tierney and Marconi's Marvelous Invention. Written and produced by journalist Ed Fouhy with Chatham film maker Christopher Seufert as associate producer, the film tells the story of Marconi radio operator Matt Tierney's key role in the rescue efforts following history's most famous maritime disaster. We asked Ed to tell us the story behind the production.

Last summer a man walked into the museum, looked at one of our photo murals, pointed to a picture of one of WCC's radio operators and declared, "There's my grandfather."

 Bill Ryder and Bill Upham

William C. (Bill) Ryder and Bill Upham remember Matt Tierney.

The figure he was pointing at was Matt Tierney, an operator who worked at Chatham Radio from 1921 until his retirement three decades later.

The man who supplied the identification was Bill Upham and he had a tale to tell.

Six students from Massachusetts Maritime Academy, in "full dress blues", visited CMMC on their way to the wreath laying ceremony held at Marconi Beach in South Wellfleet. The ceremony was part of the National Park Service Titanic commemoration of the 707 lives lost. The ceremony took place at the site of the 1901 Marconi Station in South Wellfleet which played a significant role in the rescue of Titanic survivors.

Over 500 visitors came CMMC to view the new Titanic exhibit, observe 50 ham radio operators and watch the new Titanic video. This was a fitting tribute to the Marconi radio operators who played a vital role in the Titanic tragedy and rescue.
