Vol. 4: Kitchen Kids, Dads' Delights and Patriotic Potables

Lisa Feinstein here, bringing you issue four of the Provisions newsletter. I've been scurrying around like a nudnik, preparing for the Los Feliz Street Fair; if you're in the area, come find me. For now, here are a few quick items and ideas to make the dawn of summer – always a tasty time – that much sweeter. We've got a kid-friendly dessert recipe, a phalanx of Father's Day foodstuffs, a bit of kitty love and (since our next newsletter will come out after July 4) some patriotic party hints.

Kids in the Kitchen: Dessert Wontons

If, like my adorable and brilliant nephew Jonah (pictured), a kid in your life expresses an interest in preparing food, don't delay; get that kid in the kitchen. You'll thank me later. That early spark of interest, if properly cultivated, can turn into a lifetime of someone else in the family making wonderful food while you schmooze at the table and drink wine. After all, why should you cook? Here's a summer treat any young foodie with a sweet tooth will want to attempt.

DESSERT WONTONS
(Adult supervision strongly advised)
1 package of wonton skins
Nutella or some other chocolate sauce
Vegetable oil
Powdered sugar

Put 1/2 teaspoon of Nutella or chocolate in the middle of the wonton skin.
Fold in half and seal the edges with water or very light egg wash (egg and water).
Once you've assembled the wontons, heat oil until hot enough to fry, but not so hot that the wontons burn.
Fry each wonton for about 30 seconds on each side.
Remove and drain on paper towels.
Dust with powdered sugar.
ENJOY!

Father's Day: Pleasing the Paternal Palate

It may be a holiday fabricated by greeting-card companies, but it's only right that we give pops his props on Father's Day (that's June 15, people – make a note of it). Of course, dads differ in many ways (especially in their favorite foods), but Provisions has you covered.

If your pére loves the pig, allow me to suggest our succulent bacon-wrapped pork loin with caramelized onion and apple confit, perhaps with a side of blue cheese-and-pancetta mac and cheese. You say Big Daddy's a beef lover? No problem – our chile-rubbed flank steak or beef short ribs with roast vegetables will give him a bovine boost. And even if he's watching his cholesterol, you can still give his taste buds a rapturous experience with our grilled halibut (in a savory retinue of asparagus, olives and cherry tomatoes), among other items.

Should he insist on working the grill on this auspicious occasion, you can supplement the barbecued meats with a few mouth-watering sides, like an orzo salad with olive tapenade, sundried tomatoes, feta cheese and pine nuts; our spinach, beet and pecan salad with warm blue-cheese vinaigrette; or (to take the edge off the heat) our insanely refreshing heirloom-tomato gazpacho. Dad may feel like playing chef, but why should you cook?

Pet Projects

June is the Humane Society's adopt-a-cat month and the ASPCA's adopt-a-shelter-cat month, while June 20 is Take Your Dog to Work Day. I admit it: I'm one of those pushover types who can't resist a friendly, furry, four-legged critter. So let me urge you, if you have that kind of crazy love in your heart, to visit the links above and find a dog or cat to brighten your home. Here are a couple of my best friends, doing what they do best.

July 4 Drinks: Light Fuse, Get Lit

Our new friend Joanna Miller (whose online writings about candy should not be missed) has turned us on to an array of Independence Day mixed drinks – she likes to call them "John Hancocktails" – that should bring the fireworks to your patriotic party. Try mixing vodka, lemonade and grenadine for a refreshing red beverage that'll inspire your guests like a Souza march. And with a little blue curaçao on top of clear booze and grenadine, you'll have yourself a flag in a glass. For visitors with more exotic tastes, white rum with a splash of Chambord adds a tropical-continental touch; garnish with a blue parasol. And if the heat's made you feel less ambitious, a Cape Codder (that's vodka and cranberry, citizen) celebrates our nation's Northeastern roots. In any case, now is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their party.
