Dear SADD Advisors & Students,

It was great seeing everyone at our statewide conferences in November.  We trust that you received a lot of helpful information and ideas for your chapter.

We would like to bring some activities to your attention that focus on significant issues.  As you plan your spring calendar of events, we hope that you will join us in promoting & conducting these activities.

As always, PA SADD is here to help you.  We're just a phone call or email away!
PROJECT STICKER SHOCK
April 18-22, 2011

Project Sticker Shock Logo
Project Sticker Shock is a powerful youth-driven environmental approach designed to capitalize on community activism, cooperative efforts, and collective responsibilities to combat underage drinking and its related problems.  The project not only educates, but also sends a clear, consistent message to the community that it will not tolerate adults providing alcohol to anyone under 21.  By engaging partners from within the community, Project Sticker Shock can be an effective tool that is easy to get support for and even easier to conduct.

PA SADD will provide you with all of the necessary tools, free of charge.  We have a sticker template (see below) that we provide you with to copy onto labels.  Also included is a 36-page manual that takes you through the planning and implementation process step-by-step, including sample letters and press releases.   Your only cost will be for labels, which you can purchase at any local office supply store for about $14/250 labels.  Most groups that have conducted Project Sticker Shock in the past have done it very effectively with spending no more than $50.

To conduct this campaign, you begin by contacting your local beer distributor(s) and arranging to visit their store during the week of April 18th to apply the stickers to their most popular cases of alcoholic beverages.  In addition, you can solicit the participation of local elected officials, chiefs of police, and media to join you that day.  This campaign is generally well covered by the media because it is a very visual activity that generates a lot of public interest.

Click on the link below to read more details and to download the necessary material request forms from PA SADD.  Once the forms are returned to our office, we can have the template and guidebook in your hands electronically within moments, or within days if it needs to be mailed to you.

National Youth Traffic Safety Month
May 2011

Distracted driving has moved to the forefront of concern, particularly with young drivers.  Texting, talking on the phone, too many passengers, and general multi-tasking while driving are becoming leading causal factors in motor vehicle crashes and fatalities.  It's time for action!

The National Organization for Youth Safety has partnered with AT&T to help youth and youth leaders implement a distracted driving prevention program in their schools and communities.
CALLING ALL YOUTH!
National Safety Council's Teen Driving Safety Coalition

MORE TEENS DIE IN MOTOR VEHICLE CRASHES THAN THE NEXT THREE

LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH -- HOMICIDE, SUICIDE AND DISEASE -- COMBINED!!!

PA SADD would like to invite your students to become involved with our newest endeavor; the Teen Driving Safety Coalition.  This is a statewide movement, coordinated by our office and administered by the National Safety Council through a grant from the Allstate Foundation.  Our main objective is to improve Pennsylvania's culture of teen safe driving.  We will do this by reducing the number of teens killed and injured in crashes in Pennsylvania while instilling a lifetime of safe driving attitudes and behaviors among young drivers.

We really need the voice of our youth to help us in developing a plan of action and to identify what will work in reaching them and their peers.

Pennsylvania was one of only ten states chosen to receive funding to target the ever-growing concern about teen driver safety, particularly distracted driving.  This is an extremely high-energy pro-active coalition that intends to move quickly to address this issue and put our thoughts/ideas into immediate action.

There will be a one-day workshop on February 11 in the Harrisburg area -- it would be great to have some youthful input then or at any point along the way actually.  If you have students who are interested, please call Felicity or Barb at 717-238-4354, or email us at fdebacco@padui.org or bzortman@padui.org

SADD CONFERENCE & YOUTH RALLY SNAPSHOTS

Youth Leadership Institute Training (10/26/10)

Participants pictured below are learning teamwork by attempting to cross a rope bridge (simulated by blocks of paper laid out on the floor) while they're ankles were bound to one another.  Instructions were to advance to the end of the bridge while stepping only on the blocks, and do so without tearing the break-away binding around their ankles.  Not easy, but what a great lesson in working together toward a common goal!

YLI 2010Rally 2010

Youth Rally Day at the Capitol (10/27/10)

Over 200 SADD students gathered to take a stand against underage drinking.  Following the Rally, students had an opportunity to meet with their local legislators.
