Alcohol-Related Fatalities Hit All Time Low
For decades the number of alcohol-related fatalities in the Commonwealth has remained above 500 per year. In 2009, that number finally dipped to 449. This marks the fifth year in a row that the number of alcohol-related fatalities has decreased. Alcohol-related deaths remained 36% of the total traffic deaths, which has been the same for the past 3 years. This is according to the 2009 Pennsylvania Crash Facts & Statistics now available on line at the Department of Transportation's website.
Other notable alcohol-related crash facts include:
- 70% of the alcohol-related deaths were the drinking driver themselves
- 73% of the drinking drivers were male
- 72% of the alcohol-related crashes were during the hours of darkness, usually on a weekend
On average each day:
- 35 alcohol-related traffic crashes occurred
- 1.2 persons were killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes
- 26 persons were injured in alcohol-related crashes

Ignition Interlock Workshops
The PA DUI Association's Ignition Interlock Quality Assurance Program (QAP) Technicians have been criss-crossing the Commonwealth over the past three months delivering presentations to police departments, probation offices and DUI programs. The 90-minute powerpoint covers every aspect of the ignition interlock program, with specific emphasis on the current law and future trends in device technology and legislation.
With national trends heading toward the implementation of ignition interlocks for all first time offenders regardless of BrAC, the PA DUI Association felt that now would be the perfect time to educate those most affected by any legislative changes. To date there have been over 550 individuals that have attended these presentations. The Association's QAP Technicians have many more scheduled.
If you are interested in scheduling an Ignition Interlock presentation for your agency please contact Rick Miller or Russell young at 717-238-4354

Association Hosts Seventh Annual Run/Walk
Almost 250 runners and walkers braved the hot, humid weather and over cast skies to participate in the PA DUI Associations 7th Annual 10k Run/1 Mile Walk on June 5, 2010. Before the event started, Association President Wayne Harper offered a few inspiring words encouraging the participants prior to hitting the course. 1st place overall runners Brian Waters (35:23) and Gredda Spittle (43:28) maintained a blazing pace for both the male and female participants. After the event, there were refreshments and an awards ceremony.
The Annual 10k Run/1 Mile Walk is dedicated to remembering DUI Victims. All of the proceeds raised from this event are used to maintain the DUI Victims' Memorial Garden and to continue the Association's efforts to eradicate impaired driving. The DUI Victims' Memorial Garden was created to honor the men, women, and children who have lost their lives to DUI. Currently, there are nearly 1800 engraved bricks bearing the names of those victims. |
