From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so.    James 3:8&10

ECSLA Hurricane Isaac Recovery Collaboration Efforts
Episcopal Community Services

Dear Friends in Christ,

As flood waters recede and power is restored across southeast Louisiana, our churches, with the assistance of Episcopal Community Services (ECSLA), are responding to those suffering from Hurricane Isaac.  Karla Sikaffy duPlantier and Deacon Elaine Clements are working to assess unmet needs in the hardest hit areas, coordinating with local churches, and applying for emergency funding to serve those in need. Here are some of the efforts currently underway:
  • ECSLA is working with St. Timothy's in LaPlace on securing funding to set up a case manager in their neighborhood to provide direct assistance to those who have experienced flooding
  • Archdeacon Priscilla Maumus (CCC) and Deacon Elaine Clements of ECS have initiated a school supply drive for Laplace as many students are facing having to change schools and buy a second round of supplies.  Deacon Charles deGravelles is organizing Baton Rouge in the same effort.  Those supplies will be delivered by the deacons to Laplace this week and next
  • ECSLA is exploring ways to assist Slidell, through Christ Episcopal Church, in responding to the needs of that community
  • ECSLA is developing ways for our Volunteer program to support Braithwaite through the use of volunteers which will be housed at All Soul's Episcopal Church
  • ECSLA secured a grant from ERD for partial funding to offset expenses to take the Mobile Medical Unit of St. Anna's into storm affected areas and for direct services in Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. John the Baptist Parishes
  • ECSLA is working with St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, All Soul's Episcopal Church, St. Anna's Episcopal Church to serve as a distribution site for relief funds in Orleans Parish as they become available
  • ECSLA and St. Phillip's Episcopal Church are in the process of determining how to be of assistance to the Braithwaite community, across the river from the church
In order to fund these ministries, and others as needs dictate, ECSLA has received a grant from Episcopal Relief & Development for emergency relief funds to be used for gas cards, food, rental assistance, utilities and other direct assistance needs.  Funds will also cover expenses of running the St. Anna's Mobile Medical Unit to LaPlace.  ECSLA has also developed a long-term grant request to ERD to be submitted for long-term recovery.

In addition, The Rt. Rev'd Morris K. Thompson, Jr. has created a fund with the help of Episcopal Relief and Development that will be used to meet the needs of our community as they become clear in the weeks ahead.  Bishop Thompson and ECSLA have committed that all contributions will be carefully segregated from the diocesan budget. Donations can be made online at ecsla.org or checks may be made payable to Episcopal Community Services, 1623 Seventh Street, NOLA 70115.

Living With Purpose Fellowship Welcomes New Interns
Episcopal Community Services

We are proud to welcome the third class of the Living With Purpose Fellowship!  It is always a blessing and great responsibility to host young adults in our diocese and walk with them for a year, helping to discern their call while serving the poor.  This year brings with it the added blessing of a second LWP house.  Building on the successes of our first two years, LWP has partnered with St James, Baton Rouge to establish a new LWP house on the church campus in Baton Rouge.  This massive outreach effort by St James allows LWP to live into the mission of Episcopal Community Services by serving across our diocese and out of New Orleans.

The 10 LWP Fellows completed an Isaac-interrupted orientation August 31, and began their year of service to vulnerable communities at their site placements September 4.  The themes of their first month together are Investment, Balance, Vulnerability, and Community.  Each week the LWP Fellows meet after work for a chapter meeting to engage these themes, NOLA on Tuesdays and BR on Wednesdays.  Please welcome:

 Coming Later This Fall:
Christ Centered Prayer Workshop Oct 6th

Trinity Church, New Orleans

Christ Centered Prayer Workshop at Trinity, New Orleans:  Saturday, October 6, Trinity will welcome the Reverend Sandy Casey-Martus for a one-day, introductory workshop on Christ Centered Prayer, a form of contemplative prayer.

Participants will be invited to learn about the practice, try it for themselves, and incorporate it into their personal rhythm of prayer.  Sandy writes, "Christ Centered Prayer builds upon previous contemplative practices without reliance on sacred images, breath, thoughts, or words.   It is easy to learn and fulfills Jesus' invitation to, 'Come and find rest for your souls.'  With Jesus as model, scriptures as reference, tradition as custodian, sacraments as celebration, and selfless service as mission, Christ Centered Prayer finds its source, sustenance, and direction."  Sandy has studied various forms of contemplative prayer for over thirty years.  She is currently Associate Rector of All Saints by the Sea Episcopal Church in Santa Barbara.

Space is limited to only thirty people.  The workshop begins at 9am in the Parish House.  We will share a catered buffet lunch of fresh, local foods from Nolavore and conclude our time together at 3pm.  A fee of $30 covers food and materials.  Financial assistance is available.  To register, contact Peter Gray at (504) 670-2584 or pgray@trinitynola.com.   Trinity is located at 1329 Jackson Avenue in New Orleans.
