Education for Ministry (EfM) Two Fall Opportunities: Baton Rouge & New Orleans
Education for Ministry (EfM) is a four-year curriculum produced by the Program Center of The University of the South (Sewanee). Over the course of four years, students cover Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, and Theological Choices in a weekly group setting led by EfM-trained mentors.
EfM is not necessarily coursework leading to ordained ministry, but rather a rigorous curriculum that helps all, lay and ordained, to realize the fullness of that ministry to which God has specifically called each and every one of us. Through our studies we develop a system of thought and theology whereby we come to see God at work in our everyday world, and even through our own hearts, minds and hands.
Baton Rouge - St James Church
The Rev. Mary Ann Garrett and Ann Holmes will be starting a new EfM group in the Fall of 2012 to be held on Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Please contact either of them with your questions, or for more information about registering for Education for Ministry.
New Orleans - The Cathedral
Bill Forman is seeking additional members for a continuing EfM group in the Fall of 2012 to be held at the Cathedral. The group will meet each week for two hours from September to May. Please contact Bill at 504-891-0524 with questions or for more information about registering for Education for Ministry.

Church of the Annunciation to present youth choir from N. Ireland - August 3rd
The Omagh Community Youth Choir from Northern Ireland will present a concert at the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation, 4505 South Claiborne Avenue, New Orleans, Friday, August 3, at 7:00 pm. Admission is free but donations to the choir will be accepted.
The Omagh Community Youth Choir was formed in October 1998 in the wake of a bomb on August 15, 1998. That act of cruelty left Omagh, a town of 20,000 in County Tyrone, devastated. The choir was the vision of local music student Daryl Simpson who, together with other local musicians and youth leaders brought together young people from many backgrounds and conflicting traditions to raise positive awareness of a community working together for peace and reconciliation.

French Vespers A Part of Louisiana's Bicentennial Celebration - August 5th
Mt. Olivet and the Cathedral Mount Olivet has been holding a service of Vespers in French twice a year since the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase in 2003, celebrating and preserving the unique French heritage and culture of our state. This summer the Vespers service will be an official part of the New Orleans Celebration of the bicentennial of Louisiana's becoming a state in 1812, thereby making thousands of new Francophone citizens of the United States.
Anticipating the event to draw more people than Mt Olivet can seat, the service will take place at Christ Church Cathedral, thanks to Dean David DuPlantier and Music Director Jarrett Follette. The Rev'd Dr. Jean Meade will lead the service. The bulletin will be printed in English and in French so everyone can follow along. Mr. Follette will play classic French organ works for the prelude and postlude. The choir anthem is the very famous Cantique de Jean Racine, by Gabriel Fauré, to be sung by the combined Cathedral and Mount Olivet choirs; contralto Keith Porteous will be the soloist for the Cantique de Marie, or Magnificat. The service music was composed by Albinas Prizgintas of Trinity church for the first Vespers in French back in 2003. The readers are Ms. Elsie Bouchette of Haiti, Mr. Walker Ronaldson of the Cathedral, and the Rev'd Ormonde Plater.
We hope everyone interested in the French language and culture and who will appreciate a lovely Evensong, part of our great Anglican tradition, will attend. |
