General Convention 2012 is complete! - Fr. Ken Ritter, Convention Delegate

The House of Bishops has adjourned and the House of Deputies has now adjourned.   General Convention 2012 is now over.
It has been a long General Convention and our Deputation is weary as we head home soon.  GC is full of very long days and what we will likely treasure most back home in Louisiana is more sleep and to be able to eat food that we have prepared in our own homes!

General Convention has been held in past years for 10 days and this year it was held in 8 days.  This seemed to be a blessing but, as it turned out, we conducted the same amount of business as last Convention in a shorter amount of time!  This meant that we spent a lot more time on the floor of the House of Deputies in session.  Whew!

It was a very good Convention and while each of us certainly disagreed with one or more pieces of legislation (and sometimes with each other), and there certainly were some tense moments in the House, there was, nevertheless, a good spirit in this Convention and we made great progress toward major change in our Church.  I believe that this General Convention may prove to be historic because of the significant pieces of legislation passed and because of the impetus for change in our Church that has been set in motion.  Our deputation is hopeful for our Church.

Just prior to the end of Convention the House of Deputies said farewell to Bonnie Anderson, who is stepping down as the President of the House of Deputies after 6 years and two General Conventions.  She received several standing ovations.  Mother Gay Jennings, a priest, has been elected as the new President of the House of Deputies.

Our deputation is very grateful for the prayers and support that we have received from our friends, families and fellow Episcopalians in our diocese.  God bless you all!

It was a pleasure to work with a wonderful and very dedicated deputation.  What a great group of people!

Sine die.  Back to Louisiana we come!

St. ANNA'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH FEATURES LATINO MURAL, New Orleans, LA

Since 2007 St. Anna's Episcopal Church has hosted an adult education and enculturation school called Oportunidades NOLA for Latinos in the metro New Orleans area. This very successful school enjoys collaborations with Loyola University, LSU, and Tulane Universities. The school is fashioned as both a learning center and cultural haven for Latinos. Among its many offerings is a program sponsored by the Government of Mexico called Plaza Comunitaria a GED type course.

Two Oportunidades students Felix and Gian Carlos wanted to offer a mural to the church that sponsors the school. The mural is located on the second floor of the Parish House which is now used as one of two sites for classes.

A special bi-lingual mass will be held on Wednesday July 18th at 6:00 p.m. which is the feast of Bartolomé de las Cases. This sometimes obscure Spaniard, Las Casas, is often seen as one of the first advocates for universal Human Rights arguing the humanity of native peoples before the Spanish courts. The special worship service will conclude at the mural with a blessing and benediction before dismissal.

The public is invited to attend the worship service and to view the mural following the worship service until 8:00 p.m. The artists will be available for questions and of course compliments. For further information about the mass please contact St. Anna's at (504) 947-2121 or e-mail luigi@stannanola.org.
