The Longest Night Service - St Martin's Church, Metairie Dec 14th at 6pm
St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 2216 Metairie Road, in Metairie will offer "The Longest Night" service on Wednesday, December 14 at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel. The Longest Night is a worship service with two main themes, remembrance of those persons who are no longer with us on earth and to remember that the Light of Christ shines most brightly in the darkness of our losses.
The timing of the service is significant in a couple of ways. On the seasonal front, December 14 is a date near the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. December 14 also falls in the heart of Advent and the preparations for Christmas. For many, the expectation is that everything should be wonderful during this season, when in reality some might be having a difficult time because of losses or other personal reasons.
This service, which is something of a modified Lessons and Carols service, includes prayers, Scripture readings, hymns, and the lighting of candles that are then placed on the altar. The service lasts about forty-five minutes.
The Longest Night service is open to all, and anyone who has lost a loved one or otherwise is having a difficult time during the approach of the Christmas season is encouraged to attend. Others may want to attend simply to show support for those who seek solace in the service. For more information, you may call the church office, 835-7357.

Give Joy to a Prisoner's Child this Christmas.
Volunteer for Angel TreeŽ You can "adopt" a child of an indigent prisoner for Christmas and purchase a toy and an item of clothing in the 26th year of St. James involvement with Angel Tree Ministry. Those who take a child's name usually spend around $40.00. We will have 48 children in the greater Baton Rouge area for whom to purchase gifts in the name of their imprisoned parent. Your wrapped and tagged gift, along with Angel Tree booklets will be delivered to these children who, through no fault of their own, might otherwise do without this Christmas. Please call Nancy Penn at 225-926-2122 if you are interested in sharing your Christmas joy. | |

Advent Lessons & Carols
The Lessons & Carols order of service, developed over 90 years ago, remains both traditional and ever-changing as each choir selects their own set of pieces - traditional standards as well as new compositions - to tell the story of the incarnation. The never-changing theme of the service is the illumination of the loving purposes of God through the readings and music.
