Economic Perspective - February 1, 2010
by J. David Lewis
The first month of 2010 ended with the stock market down a bit from its beginning. In the gym recently, a friend called my attention to this, by saying he returned from a trip to find the Dow significantly below where he left it. I reminded him of the very strong gains since March and that one can expect bulls to slow down as they age. That conversation ended more like friendly jostling in the gym than a serious concern. In truth, it was fun.
There was a more disturbing phone call in the last week of January. A lady seemed convinced Obama's State of the Union Address would drastically worsen the economy and a portfolio she recently inherited. Something on the internet had her speculating the account was already down $30,000. (more...) |
Volunteer Health Program May Assist Haitians
February 26 through March 6, 2009, I was in Dominican Republic with Volunteer Health Program. Most of us can remember that was just a few days before the stock markets finally reached their low point. It was a tough decision to go. Yet, it has been one of my most moving experiences from 2009. In the "long term," those days, watching these people work so hard to help so many, will probably be even more important to me than the market rally since I returned. Now, Volunteer Health Program is working on logistics to extend its 2010 Dominican Republic work to include Haitians.
My pictures from the 2009 trip are linked to the picture above.

During January, we made several posts to www.resourceadv.com/blog. At least a couple of them were entertaining. For this issue of More than Money Resource we are listing links to items related to financial services regulations being discussed in our government and media. We hope this debate and the rules that eventually emerge will improve fair treatment of consumers. Other postings that may be interesting are listed in the column on the right side of the blog.
