Top of the Line
In case you haven't been watching your TV this week, be sure to tune into Maryland Public Television, MPT, for some fabulous programming. It's Chesapeake Bay Week and the topics covered are many and varied. Tonight at 9 pm there will be an interesting examination of the risks of fracking. A trailer of the film is on our website, as is the whole schedule of Chesapeake Bay Week programming. Don't miss it. Also tomorrow night is an important public hearing on the Reserve at Quiet Waters development. This development of 158 single-family and townhouse homes is controversial in that it is to be built next to Quiet Waters Park, Annapolis on land that contains long-standing forest and non-tidal wetlands. There are many opinions on this development. Look at both sides and express your opinions at the hearing or in writing. The hearing will be at City Hall, beginning at 7 p.m. Further South tomorrow night, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center will present at lecture entitled: Islands Under the Microscope: Discover the Remarkable World of Chesapeake Bay Bacteria and the South River Federation will be training volunteers who will participate in the South River Snapshot to be held Saturday. The Magothy River Association will meet tomorrow too. On Friday the weekend Earth Day events go into full swing with a rain garden installation at DNR and a reef ball building session (both offer volunteer opportunities). Saturday features an Earth Day celebration featuring birds of prey at Clock Tower Place and another at Severna Park Middle School -- both offer opportunities for free document shredding. Annapolis residents will be cleaning up public spaces under the annual GreenScape volunteer day. The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is offering a canoe trip and "citizen science" sessions to identify critters in the woods. And finally on the 42nd Anniversary of Earth Day, Sunday, there will be a volunteer planting opportunity at Quiet Waters Park and the Earth, Water and Faith Festival at Annapolis Towne Center. Whew! Ok, you have no excuse! Get outside, volunteer and learn something and when you get home, turn on MPT and learn more about the Bay. More about all of these events is on our website - click here.

Petition to Save the Remaining Forests on Forest Drive
There is a petition that is resonating with the environmental community in the Annapolis area. Sponsored by the Sierra Club Maryland Chapter -- Anne Arundel County Group, the Annapolis Neck Peninsula Federation, the Save Your Annapolis Neck group, and the Severn River Association, it calls on the Mayor and City Council to "Stop Annapolis from Trading Forest for Traffic." The issue is the proposed construction of two projects on Forest Drive, the Reserve at Quiet Waters and the Crystal Springs development. These would include 681 residences and 200,000 sq. ft. of commercial space on 140 acres. That's a lot of traffic and pressure on already overcrowded schools. Fully 61 percent of the two surviving forests in the city would be bulldozed. At issue is this and whether the State's Forest Conservation Act is being violated.
If this is important to you, click here to learn more and sign the petition. We have information about the Reserve at Quiet Waters project on our website too. Click here. The Board of Appeals hearing on the Reserve at Quiet Waters will be held Wednesday, April 18 at City Hall, 7 p.m. If this is important to YOU, plan to attend.
