Over the past five years we've provided an on-line and in-person way t
o distribute local environmental information, make friends and alliances, and exchange views. Your support of our programs tells us that you believe we are providing a valuable service. Changing our status to non-profit allows us to take on projects funded by grants and tax-deductible donations. But in this "formative period," we need your financial support to get established.

Top of the Line

There are so many things going on to help the environment this month, Earth Day month... it's just amazing.

Today, April 2
First, we want to bring an event that takes place today to your attention. At 7 p.m. tonight, Marylanders from all over the state will rally to form a human chain, a "Circle of Support" to show legislators, particularly Senators, that there is a lot of public support for the offshore wind bill. The legislation passed the House of Delegates last week. Now it's up to the Senate to act. At the rally there will be speakers and participants will hold glowing miniature wind turbines to "increase the inspiring aura" of what will be an unforgettable, one-of-a-kind image of support for clean energy. We think it will be great fun for a serious cause. For more info

Wednesday, April 11
Join alternative green transportation enthusiasts at a reception welcoming the Trans-American Electric Bike Tour to Annapolis on Wednesday, April 11
at 6 p.m. This month's email sponsor Green Pedals will host the event at its 105 Annapolis Street location in West Annapolis. Read more.

Saturday, April 14
There are many stream clean-ups planned in the next few weeks, many part of Project Clean Stream, on Saturday, April 14. Nearby sites include Annapolis Harbour Center, Chesapeake Children's Museum, and the Woodhaven community in Davidsonville. For more info about where and when you can volunteer to do a little spring cleaning for our environment, click on the image. At Saturday's clean up in the Severn River, 51 volunteers removed almost 15 tons of trash and metal, including 172 tires from Luce Creek!

Walk for the Woods
Also on Saturday, April 14, is the Scenic Rivers Land Trust's Walk for the Woods. You can take one or more walks -- at various levels of intensity -- in the Bacon Ridge Natural Area in Crownsville. This is wild land that is permanently preserved in its natural state -- what a rare treat! See this special part of the South River Greenway at this family friendly, free event. Read more.

Petition to Save the Remaining Forests on Forest Drive
And finally, we want to bring to your attention a petition that is resonating with the environmental community in the Annapolis area. Sponsored by the Sierra Club Maryland Chapter -- Anne Arundel County Group, the Annapolis Neck Peninsula Federation, the Save Your Annapolis Neck group, and the Severn River Association, it calls on the Mayor and City Council to "Stop Annapolis from Trading Forest for Traffic." The issue is the proposed construction of two projects on Forest Drive, the Reserve at Quiet Waters and the Crystal Springs development. These would include 681 residences and 200,000 sq. ft. of commercial space on 140 acres. That's a lot of traffic and pressure on already overcrowded schools. Fully 61 percent of the two surviving forests in the city would be bulldozed. At issue is this and whether the State's Forest Conservation Act is being violated. If this is important to you, click here to learn more and sign the petition. We have information about the Reserve at Quiet Waters project on our website too. Click here.

Cleaning Up Our Waterways:
Above, In and Under Water!

annapolis green logo
We are going to present you with info on clean-ups of our waterways on a local and national scale -- from the surface to below. We will be featuring the Rozalia Project, whose goal is to clean up the ocean floor using  yellow, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to clasp old cans, discarded traps and other debris. The crew operates the ROVs using sophisticated imaging systems that allow them to target and remove trash in a non-invasive way. They want to remove every single bit of waste from the ocean through direct action, and to show people what it looks like to see the impact of ocean litter. Read this story that details why trash in the oceans is everyone's problem. The bottom line: NOAA says there are and astounding 13 thousand pieces of litter per square kilometer in the world's oceans. We'll have more details soon on Rozalia and on local green boating info and more that we'll present during our event. But we do want you to know that SpinSheet, the BOAT US Foundation and the National Sailing Center and Hall of Fame are the organizations responsible for bringing Rozalia to our area! Read all about it in SpinSheet's blog.

That covers the underwater part -- what we can't see. What about debris on the surface? It's a real problem too. The Ocean Conservancy recently released a report from the International Coastal Cleanup that shows what kind of trash was found at beach cleanups around the world last year. It's not a pretty sight. Read more and see  the charge below -- it's the same crud we find all over the Bay! And animals swallow this stuff in many cases leading to slow, agonizing death. We'll have information on what we all can do on an international, national, and local level to improve our planet. You'll be inspired!

Remember, you don't have to drink alcoholic beverages to enjoy Green Drinks. As always, there will be complimentary appetizers and a cash bar.

We always welcome volunteers to help us greet at the door. Interested? Send us an email.

See you next week!
