Moving Planet:
Charging Forward
for Maryland Offshore Wind Power

Rolling Rally
for Climate Solutions

Saturday, Sept. 24

11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Clean Currents and Bike Maryland will promote efforts to develop the state's offshore wind energy resources with the very first "rolling rally" to hit the streets of Annapolis.

The purpose is to illustrate to Annapolis legislators that there is support for offshore wind energy in Maryland. Speakers will include Senate Majority Leader Rob Garagiola, Jim Strong of the United Steelworkers of Maryland and Dave Goodrich, the former head of the NOAA climate observation unit who earlier this year biked across the country to spread awareness of climate change.

This is part of a global day of climate action called "Moving Planet." Join the rolling rally of bikes, skateboards, strollers and more, taking the "people-powered movement" to State Circle, to a theatrical bill signing and the final assemblage of miniature wind turbines by workers on the water. To learn more and register and join on your bike or other people-powered vehicle click here.  It will be fun for a great cause!

Quiet Waters Park Visitors Center

5:30-7:30 p.m.

"Environmental Education Makes Good Green Neighbors"

Quiet Waters Park is one of Anne Arundel County's jewels. The 340-acre park is just off Forest Drive on the northern shore of the South River. It is a verdant oasis with nature trails, an art gallery, a cafe, a dog park, ice skating rink, and soon... a butterfly and reading garden. Come early to Green Drinks and join the Friends of Quiet Waters Park and Garrett's Light in a groundbreaking ceremony for the garden, beginning promptly at 5 p.m. | See the invitation.

Our theme is "Environmental Education Makes Good Green Neighbors." Although things are still taking shape, we can tell ou that there will be some topical exhibitors including the County Recreation and Parks Department, the Annapolis Maritime Museum, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and more.

Our event will be sponsored by Clean Currents, our wind energy supplier. Clean Currents has initiated the The Green Neighborhood Challenge, a program for communities to get involved in clean energy, to do fund raising, and to help build an environmental movement. It's a way for your community, group, school, or faith organization to support clean, renewable energy. By joining together, communities can educate their members about choosing wind and solar power at home as well as encourage and inspire each other to live more sustainable lifestyles. Clean Currents can help your community with these efforts by providing resources, hosting educational events, and promoting your group or organization.

The goal of our Green Neighborhood Challenge is to support the efforts of community groups that are actively "greening" their neighborhoods. Based upon each group's level of involvement, Clean Currents will donate money back to each group to go towards financing a "greening project" of their choice. Read more.

Appetizers will be provided by the concessionaire at the park, Pit Boys. We'll have more info soon on the sustainable yummies they will serve. As always, we'll have beer, wine and soft drinks available. Cash bar.

Please pass info about our event on to your neighbors and your neighborhood association! We'd love to welcome lots of new Green Drinkers to this event where we have lots of room to network, talk, walk, and get to know our neighbors.

As always, we'd love to have some volunteer greeters help us out at the event. If you are interested, please email Lynne. Check out our website for more details.

See you next week!

A Success and More to Come!

CBYRA, WasteStrategies & Annapolis Green

Made Annapolis Race Week More Green
& Bay Friendly

Photo by Mark Molesky for WasteStrategies

A LOT of plastic, metal and glass was diverted out of the landfill path last weekend as Chesapeake Bay sailors did the right thing and filled up WasteStrategies' brand-new recycling bins at Annapolis Race Week's parties at City Dock. We and  WasteStrategies worked with the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association to provide the bins, signs, and publicity about the effort and the partygoers responded.

The final figures will be out next week as WasteStrategies is counting and weighing the material put in the trash vs that put in recycling. Preliminarily, however, we can tell you that there was MUCH more recycling than trash and that is GREAT!

This proves that people will do the right thing if they are given a clear choice. Stay tuned for more info!

Maryland Seafood Festival

Now, look for us again this weekend at the Maryland Seafood Festival -- we are helping to Green that event too. Annapolis Green will have a presence at the festival in its Green Tent, spreading information about living sustainably AND helping the festival itself recycle and reduce waste.

We need volunteers to help us staff the tent! Interested? Send Lynne an email. | Information about the Festival
