Rolling Rally
for Climate Solutions

Saturday, Sept. 24

11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Clean Currents and Bike Maryland will promote efforts to develop the state's offshore wind energy resources with the very first "rolling rally" to hit the streets of Annapolis.

The purpose is to illustrate to Annapolis legislators that there is support for offshore wind energy in Maryland. Speakers will include Senate Majority Leader Rob Garagiola, Jim Strong of the United Steelworkers of Maryland and Dave Goodrich, the former head of the NOAA climate observation unit who earlier this year biked across the country to spread awareness of climate change.

This is part of a global day of climate action called "Moving Planet." Join the rolling rally of bikes, skateboards, strollers and more, taking the "people-powered movement" to State Circle, to a theatrical bill signing and the final assemblage of miniature wind turbines by workers on the water. To learn more and register and join on your bike or other people-powered vehicle click here.  It will be fun for a great cause!

Wednesday, Sept. 14

Quiet Waters Park Visitors Center

5:30-7:30 p.m.

Our theme is "Environmental Education Makes Good Green Neighbors."

Our event will be sponsored by Clean Currents, our wind energy supplier. Clean Currents has initiated the The Green Neighborhood Challenge, a program for communities to get involved in clean energy, to do fund raising, and to help build an environmental movement. It's a way for your community, group, school, or faith organization to support clean, renewable energy. By joining together, communities can educate their members about choosing wind and solar power at home as well as encourage and inspire each other to live more sustainable lifestyles. Clean Currents can help your community with these efforts by providing resources, hosting educational events, and promoting your group or organization.

The goal of our Green Neighborhood Challenge is to support the efforts of community groups that are actively "greening" their neighborhoods. Based upon each group's level of involvement, Clean Currents will donate money back to each group to go towards financing a "greening project" of their choice. Read more.

We'll have details on our event for you soon. Save the date to join us at Quiet Waters, a jewel of a green sanctuary right in town.

Breaking News!

CBYRA, WasteStrategies & Annapolis Green

to Make Annapolis Race Week More Green
& Bay Friendly

This weekend is a big one for Chesapeake Bay sailors - it's Annapolis Race Week, the premier sailing regatta in the Mid-Atlantic Region - and we're helping the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association and our partner, WasteStrategies, to make it Green!

Racing starts Saturday and over 175 boats are expected to enter. When the 1200+ sailors (from all over the country) come off the water, at about 4 p.m., and head for the tent party at Susan C. Campbell Park on City Dock, they will find colorfully marked trash and recycling bins, specially designed and provided by WasteStrategies.

The bins will be clearly marked with big signs to educate patrons about what to put in each one. For this event, recycling will consist of metal, plastic and glass - everything else will go in the trash container.

We Know sailors are good stewards of the environment, especially the Bay, and that they will feel good about keeping many pounds of trash out of the landfill.

Concurrently with picking up the trash and recycling, WasteStrategies will conduct an audit in order to give CBYRA, and the public, good data on exactly how much trash was diverted to recycling and kept out of the landfill. This is not only good for the environment, it makes economic sense too! We'll let you know how the numbers turn out.

And in case you wondering why paper is not being recycled as it is normally comingled with metal, plastic and glass in Anne Arundel County, for sustainability purposes, this recovered material is going directly to a recycler. At next year's event, WasteStrategies will implement a comprehensive waste reduction plan based on the date gathered from this year's waste audit.

WasteStrategies, by the way, is a local company that "provides turnkey environmental management solutions of multiple waste streams at multiple levels in a way that reduces costs, increases the amount of waste that is recycled, and focuses on an end result of zero waste."

We congratulate CBYRA for taking this step toward sustainability! And we're glad to help spread the word! This is the first of several upcoming special events for which Annapolis Green will encourage sustainability practices and help to spread the word.

The Annapolis Race Week tent parties, by the way, are free and open to the public. Food and drink will be available for sale.

Tent parties include food, bars, retail sales, live music, competitions and raffles. Daily awards are presented each evening and the final awards ceremony takes place Monday. The tent party schedule is below. Start times are approximate, as the time it takes to finish a race is as unpredictable as the wind.

Saturday, Sept. 3 - 4 - 8 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 4 - 4 - 8 p.m.
Monday, Sept. 5 - 3 - 7 p.m.

For more information about the regatta, see cbyra.org/arw/default.aspx. Also see wastestrategies.com.

Annapolis Green also has teamed up with WasteStrategies on a number of upcoming projects, including greening the Seafood Festival. So, Annapolis Green will have a presence at the festival in its Green Tent, spreading information about living sustainably AND helping the festival itself recycle and reduce waste.

We need volunteers to help us staff the tent! Interested? Send Lynne an email. | Information about the Festival
