Top of the Line

In celebration of April's Earth Day, we are getting as close to the Bay as we can, offering both dockside and onboard experiences as we get better acquainted with our amazing neighbor: the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC)

Our event is a fundraiser for SERC

Thursday, April 14
5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

SERC, 647 Contees Wharf Road, Edgewater

Yes, we know this is a bit different, but very appropriate! The cruise portion of our event will be a bit stepped up -- including live music --  to lure you to join us aboard the charming Richard Lee. You'll enjoy our regular fare of appetizers and cash bar either way -- on land or aboard. Thank you to Chef Craig Sewell of A Cook's Cafe and Maryland Table for munchies.

Starting with our gathering at the SERC docks from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m., SERC director Tuck Hines will tell us about the marvelous global work done by this local treasure right in our backyard. Read more about SERC's educational and research work below. And although they're not bragging about it, SERC is providing an amazing example to all right on its campus with its solar electric shuttle, pervious walkways, a solar panel array and more.

Then you'll have the option of boarding the Richard Lee to see and learn more about SERC from the water as we cruise the lovely Rhode River for about an hour. You're used to our events being free, but in this case we have to charge for the boat ride, so our hosts can cover the cost of running the vessel. Thank you so much to Captains VK Holtzendorf and Mike Shay for their hospitality!

Read more about SERC and about the Richard Lee

Don't be left at the dock! The boat has a limited capacity so buy your tickets now! Then, raise a glass with us to our beautiful Bay and its future --  with the help of SERC!

Click here to buy your cruise tickets - just $25.

We hope to see you next week!

About SERC

We conduct the research that helps the world meet 21st century environmental challenges. SERC discovers scientific knowledge for sustainable ecosystems. Our research and education focuses on environmental change, ecosystem services and connectivity of coastal landscapes. For 46 years our research has provided cutting-edge scientific analysis of human impacts on the environment, with particular attention to interactions among the atmosphere, land and water.

We're in your back yard. Located 25 miles from Washington, and 10 miles from Annapolis, SERC protects 2,650 acres of forests, farm fields and wetlands on the shoreline of Chesapeake Bay, the nation's largest estuary. In addition to our role as a research hub, SERC is also home to miles of hiking trails, canoeing and boating expeditions. SERC educators annually host 20,000 schoolchildren and public visitors, and provide distance learning and electronic field trips to millions of others.

Our reach is local, national and global. Our comparative studies extend to coastal ecosystems worldwide, going as far as Alaska, Panama, New Zealand and Antarctica's Southern Ocean. SERC scientists conduct some of the longest-running environmental measurements in the world, including increasing atmospheric CO2, rising sea level, mercury pollution, blue crab ecology, invasive species, forests and wetlands, estuarine ecosystems and the impacts of land use on watersheds. Because 70 percent of the world population and 61 percent of the U.S. population live in coastal zones, our work has regional, national and global implications.

About the Richard Lee

The Richard Lee,

a USCG inspected, 110-passenger tour boat, is operated by West River Cruises. They host charters, environmental and history tours, and a limited schedule of public cruises from their homeport of Discovery Village on the Shady Side Peninsula -- 15 miles south of Annapolis.

The Richard Lee (previously named the Capt Evans) was purchased from the original owner, Captain Gordon Evans of Reedville, Va. She was custom built for passenger service in Reedville at the Jennings Boat Yard by Raymond Bray and his brother. The Richard Lee is a 65-foot, 21 foot beam, 60 ton, tour boat powered by 2 Detroit Diesel 6-71's providing an average speed of 8 knots. She is one of the last large wooden passenger vessels built on the Chesapeake Bay. She is built of massive timbers and wood species that would be difficult to reproduce today.

The classic Chesapeake Bay-built Richard Lee restores tour & passenger service on the beautiful West & Rhode Rivers of Maryland -- the first since the historic Emma Giles steam ship provided service for the rural communities along the Bay. Her shallow, 3.5 foot draft allows access to the scenic creeks and the upper and lower decks are perfect to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the historic small towns along the rivers. Read more about the Richard Lee and West River Cruises.

Earth Day is coming on April 22. Do you have activities going on to celebrate? If so, tell us so we can help you promote!

Also, our May Green Drinks will be all about Green Boating so if you have info to share on that, let us know.
