Chesapeake Bay Action Plan

The writers are "Chesapeake Bay scientists and policy makers from Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania who have concluded that after decades of effort, the voluntary, collaborative approach to restoring the health and vitality of the largest estuary in the United States has not worked and, in fact, is failing."

green drinks annapolis

And it was the LONGEST Green Drinks yet ... thank you to Crush Winehouse for hosting our ongoing event on January 25th! It was a fun evening ... a mix of our loyal Green Drinkers along with so many that did come join us after the 17th Annual Environmental Summit to "continue the conversation!"  And, we stepped up further by focusing on alternative, sustainable energy for your home and business and about environmental priorities in the legislative session.

The Summit had record-breaking crowds and we enjoy believing that many of our readers got the extra nudge to join in.  Afterward we had our Green Drinks banners flying on the eCruisers as they offered a free, green, warm rides over to Crush. Thanks eCruisers!

We were happy to welcome at least two delegates to our event (who stayed quite late!) and many others who were new to Green Drinks.

While thrilled at the crowds we attract these days, you all know the challenge of communicating during our good green networking events! So, in our commitment to keeping local eco-issues and messaging alive and well, we handed out a rack card to everyone who attended with our theme and message to take away. You can read that at your leisure by clicking here. (Thank you, sponsors!)

Our friends from the Chesapeake Climate Action Network also attended Green Drinks to spread the word about the legislation needed to bring offshore wind power to Maryland. Read more on the Chesapeake Climate Action Network's website.

About the Summit

George Lopez of The Solar & Wind Expo 2011 wrote a great summary of the Environmental Summit on his blog. Have a look.

This Annual Summit is when the Maryland environmental advocacy community unveils for state legislators its top  legislative priorities for the Maryland General Assembly session. Because one of the top three is passing a bill that will allow for offshore wind power in the state, our theme for Green Drinks was alternative energy for your home and business, including wind.

The summit was a great opportunity to connect with other concerned citizens, learn more about wind and other environmental policy issues, and show the legislators who attend that there is broad support for a strong environmental policy agenda in 2011.

Read about the environmental community's priorities for the 2011 Legislative Session and stay informed.

Save Those Oyster Shells!

shell recycling allianceRestaurants, caterers, and seafood wholesalers can recycle their oyster shells through the Oyster Recovery Partnership's Shell Recycling Alliance.

Now individuals can recycle from home too through the Alliance and through CBF's new program, Save Oyster Shell. The Allliance collects shell at the Annapolis Maritime Museum, 723 Second Street, and at CBF's Merrill Center. Donate your empty shells so they can be recycled and used to grow more oysters to repopulate the Bay with them. Oyster shells are literally the foundation of reef restoration efforts! Don't just throw them in the water yourself. Let the scientists do it! Read more.

Some helpful tips from the Oyster Recovery Partnership when recycling your shell:

  • DO separate shell from trash. Shell mixed with trash is not suitable for recycling.
  • DO keep shell in a porous container to reduce odors.
  • DO NOT put live oysters into Maryland waters. If the oysters you purchased were harvested outside of Maryland, it is illegal to place them in Maryland waters. Placing imported oysters into our waters can create public health problems and may harm local oysters or other animals.
  • DO NOT put freshly shucked shell in Maryland waters. To avoid contamination, shell should be dried for one year.
