July Green Drinks Wrap-Up And remember, it's Maryland Buy Local Week!
Eco-interest was alive and well as our crowds gathered at John's Hodson Boathouse on College Creek on July 13. It was a wonderful evening, only made possible by our gracious St. John's hosts, our talented AND sustainable culinary partners -- Bon Appetit and bb Bistro -- and our volunteers!
It was the ideal venue to highlight the sustainability practices the College has undertaken, including its very successful shoreline restoration. Read more about the College's many environmental practices. We were joined by Don Jackson and Steve Linhard, both of whom worked at St. John's when the living shoreline was put in (with the guidance of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation). They gave a tour to some 60 or more Green Drinkers who had lots of questions. (Both now work at St. Mary's High School; Don as Director of Facilities and Steve as COO. The school has a number of very Green initiatives under way.) Dr. Barbara Goyette, Vice President of St. John's, spoke about the various environmental initiatives that the college has enacted in the last decade ... some are simple, some complex and all are good. Members of the St. John's Friends Board's Environmental Matters Committee members, who are the contributors of the rain barrel installations and lessons on the campus, joined us as well. They and Dr. Goyette reminded us that they welcome volunteers willing to help with Greening the campus. A highlight of the evening was the raffle of the "St. John's Basket" full of St. John's branded items and a family membership at the Mitchell Gallery.
Bon Apptit, St. John's official caterer, has become a model for what is possible in sustainable food service. Bon Apptit was the first food service company to address the issues related to where our food comes from and how it is grown. Although known in larger circles, Brazil Murphy (who put our evening together for us) is very anxious to help out with local catering as well. Visit their website for more information.
And have you all been to bb Bistro in West Annapolis? Don't miss it. Owners Carla Lucente and Stacey Jackowski were both on hand with their fabulous food and enthusiasm for all they do! bb Bistro makes everything fresh, every day -- no freezer. Homemade Soups, Farm fresh local eggs, Free-Range Chicken, fresh baked bread, local seasonal vegetables." bb Bistro was one of the first five restaurants in Annapolis to receive the Environmental Stewardship Award. Click here for their menu and more about the cafe.
We would also like to thank Pam Cole and Bud Light Lime for the beer and Wine Cellars of Annapolis for selecting the outstanding organic wines from the Cono Sur vineyards in Chile. We hope you enjoyed them. We did!
As we've said before, our events can't succeed anymore without our volunteers. We were so fortunate to have the services of veteran Green Drinks bartender Dave Geipe and "learned-on-the-job" new bartender donna. Thank you so much! Also, we always appreciate the work of our event volunteers Stephanie Duncan Troxell, Leslie Trott and Mollie Williams. And a new addition, Jack McAdory, our attention-getting "whistler!" Thanks, Jack. You have to come to every Green Drinks from now on.
We also heard from Susan Comfort of One Percent for the Planet who spoke about how businesses, even small businesses, can do their part by setting aside just 1% of sales for environmental action. Thank you, Susan for the raffle of copies of "One Percent for the Planet -- The Music, Vol. 1" to five lucky winners. Stacey of bb Bistro discussed that July is Buy Local Month, designed
to increase our awareness of how important it is for our economy to buy
local. This year's Maryland Buy Local Challenge Week runs through Sunday so you have time to take the buy local challenge support your local businesses! Read more below.

If you are curious, click here to see their website. Also, Elvia is staying at an eco-village called The Commons, which is a co-housing community. It's very interesting and very Green. There are solar panels everywhere, composting bins, requirements that only Earth-friendly cleaners are used, etc. It was great to see you all at the last Green Drinks and we missed those who couldn't join us. Next month will be great casual fun as we return to the Annapolis Maritime Museum to see the exhibit, "Oysters on the Half Shell" and learn about the tasty crustaceans that are so important to the health of the Bay, thanks to the Museum and the Oyster Recovery Partnership. Until then, take the buy local challenge and enjoy the summer. Let's hope August 5 is a nice, cool day.

Our friend, Chef Rita Calvert, is blogging about Governor Martin O'Malley's cookout at the Governor's Mansion last week kicking off "Buy Local" week. She says, "The cookout chefs were those who won a competition using the best of Maryland farm's produce, meat, seafood, dairy and food products to serve to the invited guests." For more, including a free, downloadable cookbook of the great recipes, read Rita's blog. The photo is of Jeanne Dietz-Band, founder of Many Rocks Farm. What is Green Drinks?
Green Drinks is a monthly (more or less) get-together that gives the environmentally minded a chance to get to know one another in a fun, informal way facilitating connections and working together for a common cause: The Health of the Chesapeake Bay. We are apart of an amazing international group, greendrinks.org, with over 600 like us all around the world. Of course, we think our Annapolis crew is the best! Try visiting other groups while you're on the road. And, it's truly not about the drinks ... those who don't drink alcoholic beverages are welcome too! |
