Hello Green Drinkers
and welcome to all newcomers ...

homestead gardensMarch was a "Bloomin' GREAT" Green Drinks, thanks to our friends at Homestead Gardens! We've even been invited back to make this an annual event during their flower show.

We celebrated spring and all things green and organic in the garden on March 18. Our crowd of at least 200 (we've ceased trying to keep track) did what we do best. They made good Green connections and had fun doing it!

Now for our thanks ...

Our hosts at Homestead generously provided two raffle items, a beautiful basket of flowers and a $50 gift certificate. And, everyone present received a 20% off coupon good until the end of the month. We are so grateful.

Homestead CEO Don Riddle spoke to our group about the Bloomin' Annapolis program to keep downtown beautiful with hanging pots of flowers and large street-level planters. He was joined by downtown businessman Steve Samaras of Zachary's Jewelers who is heading up the program. With funds for the flowers not coming from the City nor from the Annapolis Business Association, it's up to citizens like us to contribute to this bit of cheer that is so important to visitors and residents alike. To join in, visit bloominannapolis.com.

Herrington on the Bay Eco-Lifestyle Events, how they came to our rescue and added to their already delicious menu with the Jamaican Jerk Skewers. Herrington, the first Chesapeake Bay Caterer in Maryland to achieve Green Certification as awarded by the nation's Green Restaurant Association, delighted us with Tomatoes Caprese Skewers: Marinated tomatoes, fresh Mozzarella and basil leaf served on a bamboo skewer, and the incredible Raspberry Cheesecake Lollipops which were dipped in dark organic chocolate. Yum! Herrington is continuing its cooking classes, by the way, with a Gluten Free Baking class on Sunday, March 28. See our calendar for details.

Homestead Gardens' new cafe previewed its offerings, even before it formally opened, with Maryland-grown products including cheeses, yogurt and crackers from local producers They also presented local hydroponic lettuces served with Tessemae's dressing from Annapolis.

Our adult beverages were provided by Bay Ridge Wine & Spirits with organic, sustainable wines; by our friends at Bud Light Lime, the "Summer State of Mind" beer; and Level: A Small Plates Lounge. John Hogan cooked up a very special custom wine punch that had everybody buzzing!

We can't pull off a Green Drinks without our volunteers. Special thanks to our bartenders for the evening, Greg and Mollie from Kenergy, and Dave. A big thank you also to Danielle, Stephanie, Leslie, Cathie, and Janna.

April 22 Green Drinks
Our 2nd Annual for the Chesapeake Bay

On the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, at 5:30 p.m., Green Drinks chapters throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed will come together for the second annual Green Drinks for the Chesapeake Bay to concentrate on action our grass roots movement can take to influence to legislation and government regulation to improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay -- while having fun with our eco-awareness, of course.

Annapolis Green Drinks, along with Virginia Beach Green Drinks, are the at the helm of the coordinated "toast" and call to action, with each Green Drinks group from Pennsylvania to Virginia meeting simultaneously from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., each in its respective location.

The severn inneffort also is an attempt to top the Green Drinks world attendance record, currently held by a group in Australia.

Green Drinks Annapolis is returning to the Severn Inn for its event, where attendance last year topped 200 people.

Call to Action

The Chesapeake Clean Water and Ecosystem Restoration Act of 2009, now working its way through Congress, has been called by many the last, best hope for restoration of our national treasure. We are going to use the powerful grass roots networking of Green Drinks to help move this bill along to passage.

We Green Drinkers will add our unique voice to the fight for restoration of the Chesapeake Bay by enlisting our colleagues, friends and family all across the country to obtain votes for the bill's passage in Congress - and we'll have fun doing it too.

Did you know that stormwater runoff is the only source of Chesapeake Bay pollution in Anne Arundel County that is increasing? Homeowners and communities throughout Anne Arundel County are taking action to reduce polluted runoff and prevent it from reaching our waterways. Ideally, rain that falls on a site should stay on that site. RainScaping practices-including using rain barrels, rain gardens, and native trees and shrubs to improve water quality, restore habitat, and add beauty to the landscape. Additional significant benefits are increased property values and a reduction in a community's carbon footprint.
