Establish an Effective Material Control Process
by Charles C. Shinn, Jr., PhD
As I visit job sites, I continually see excess material lying around, misused material, excess material being installed, and poor material handling and protection during delivery and after installation. Poor material control generates a substantial amount of lost profits. Let me give you a very simple example: If one $2.50 stud is wasted the cost of that stud reduces the profit by $2.50. If you are a 5% net-profit builder the cost of wasting that stud represents $50.00 of sales (100%/ 5% = 20 times; $2.50 x 20 = $50.00 of sales). Look at your job sites and see how many dollars of sales are represented by wasted, misused, damaged, and excess material.

NREL Survey By Paige Baldwin In February, Builder Partnerships conducted a survey of builders and others in the industry to better understand the interests and needs for information surrounding energy efficiency issues. We had an excellent response with 224 people telling us their greatest challenges, sources of information, product usage, consumer demand as well as other information. There was consensus among the respondents that while almost half of homebuyers are interested in energy efficiency, very few place enough value to pay for the measures. Still, nearly all builders surveyed-87 percent-are interested in energy efficiency as part of delivering great homes to the customer. Finally, appraisals don't currently account for energy efficiency upgrades. Read More...
