50 Mistakes Builders Make, Part 4:  Inefficient and Ineffective Systems and Processes
Chuck Shinn

By Charles C. Shinn, Jr., Ph.D.

This month, I will focus specifically on inefficient and ineffective systems and processes. Systems and processes typically are not well planned and tend to become cumbersome and inefficient over time. This is especially true when they become over taxed, as was the case during the last years of the housing boom. Instead of becoming simpler they became more complex with additional steps and human involvement to try to keep the systems and processes operational. Even as a custom builder, you must evaluate and standardize your systems and processes as much as possible. If you do not, you will be reinventing the wheel with each house you build and will be wasting a lot of time and money because of the inefficiencies. Read more...

Creating and Maintaining Company Value Throughout the Cycles

Ron Robichaud
By Ronald J. Robichaud, Managing Director, Robichaud Financial Services

What is being largely ignored is that truly valuable / successful companies are structured for every step of the cycle. They understand that three fundamental components of the system determine success and have to be designed appropriately to enhance and support each other and that each has to be constantly evaluated and improved upon. The three are Strategic Vision, Operations Excellence, and Capital Structure. This article will focus on the importance of maintaining a good Capital Structure. Read more...

The liability insurance market today for builders has improved considerably since the exit of the major players in the late 1990s. However, a detailed look at the new products available to builders reveals that while prices have come down, it has been at the cost of coverage for many builders. Insurance companies, hit hard by class action lawsuits against builders 10 years ago, are trying to limit their exposure to class action lawsuits today. This leaves the builder unprotected against a true catastrophic event - the very reason builders buy liability insurance in the first place. Read more...

In addition to the CAD drawings and estimates, option management includes accurate option costing for each and every option and option combination. The completion of these tasks is not only critical to fully understand how to build the house, but to also understand the cost, price and therefore profit margin to the builder. Read more...
