By Glenn Singer
Last week I had a conversation with an executive for a nationally-known building material manufacturer as his company had just signed up with Builder Partnerships. The purpose of the call was to indoctrinate him and his team to the specific details of our program and to lay out a strategy to convert our builder members to his product offering. Read more... |
| Need Help in the Downturn?
The Shinn Group Offers All Kinds |
|
I t is not news that we are in one of the greatest housing slumps of all time. There is a long, hard road ahead not only for builders, but for bankers as well. Builder delinquencies are increasing due to the decreased value of loan collateral, and many builders are scrambling to restructure AD&C loans to avoid foreclosures. The Shinn Group is positioned to help both sides. Read more... |
| Members Gain Valuable Insight
from Discussions and Networking Conferences |
|
Each month we continue to fill up all seats for our Audio Conferences, and builders gain valuable insight from experts and each other on operating in this challenging market. Last month on the Purchasing Manager's call, the discussion was on Establishing a Trade Council. Members shared their experiences and discussed tough questions such as what to do when competitive contractors offer a better price or better service than trade council members. They also offered each other suggestions on how to strengthen the reputation of the builder in the market to increase competition and desire amongst the trades to be a part of their council. Everyone left with several great tips on how to improve their programs. Read more... |
| 25 Sure Ways to Improve Profitability, Part 25:
Build the House Right the First Time |
|
By Charles C. Shinn, Jr., Ph.D., Shinn Consulting
Last month, we encouraged you to analyze the management systems within your organization. This month I challenge you to build the house RIGHT the first time and eliminate costly tear-downs and rework. I have been building up to this last point, as every step we have described will lead you to build the house RIGHT the first time. The home building industry operates very inefficiently, thus providing you with increased opportunities to excel in your market place. Take a good look at all your processes: how you work with your customers and homeowners; the way you manage your jobsites; how you work and communicate with your trades; how you negotiate and purchase; your change order policies during the construction process, just to name a few, and you will hear the inefficiencies calling out for help. | Millions and Millions of Reasons |
|
Since its beginning, millions and millions of products have been manufactured every year by a company unique to the HVAC industry. A company founded by a dealer. So it should be no surprise this company is responsible for one of the fastest-growing brands in the HVAC marketplace today. More and more HVAC dealers and home builders depend on the brands offered by the Goodman Manufacturing Company, Inc., family of companies every day. In a short span of just twenty-five years, the company is now the second largest domestic manufacturer of heating, ventilation and air conditioning products for residential and light commercial use based on unit sales. While there are many, many reasons the company has grown in stature, one thing has not changed since day one. The company founded by a dealer continues to think like a dealer. Read more... |
| Bank/Market Survey
Reveals Builders' Experiences |
|
Most banks are willing to work with us as long as a plan is outlined and we meet the requirements," says Emeric Robert of Kaye Homes in Naples, Fla. He gave this response as part of The Shinn Group's 2008 Bank/Market Survey. "The more a builder takes personal responsibility for his situation and is proactive in proposing and trying solutions, the better off he and his bank will be," adds Jim Weigel of Shinn Consulting. | Basements Hold Profit Potential for Builders |
|
T he dramatic slow down in the housing market has builders looking for ways to differentiate their homes, provide homeowners with greater value, and generate more profit. One opportunity may well be right under the builder's nose, the basement. Many areas of the country have homes with basements, and often they are overlooked as a source of profit. In large part they become forgotten resources for the builder to tap as the traditional focus is on above ground construction. With the market down, now may be the time to pay closer attention to this under utilized asset. Read more... |
