FROM THE MENAHEL

NICE SPEECH

In this week's Parsha, when Hashem commands Noach to bring the animals onto the ark, He says, "You will take from every  tehora (ritually fit) animal seven pairs- male and female, and from the animals that are lo tehora (not ritually fit) you will take one pair-male and female." (Beresheit 7:2)

The Gemara in Pesachim notes that normally the Torah uses as few words as necessary.  Thus, it would have been expected for Hashem to have said, "tameh" (impure) rather than "lo tehora" (not ritually fit).  However, here we are learning an important lesson.  It was more important to say something in the nicest possible way than in the shortest possible way.  It is nicer to describe something as "not ritually fit" than "impure".  Therefore, this was the language Hashem decided to employ in the Torah.

(It is interesting to note that when the Torah discusses the laws of Kashrut, it does talk about animals being tameh.  This is because at that point the Torah is teaching us laws and it must be clear that these animals are forbidden.)

The Rabbis teach that whenever possible, we must also say things in the nicest possible way.  Certainly if this applies to animals who have no feelings, this applies to interactions with one another.  We must be careful to make sure that the way we talk to others reflects the sensitivity and care one would expect from a Torah Jew.

At Torah Academy, we seek to help our students learn proper speech, along with all other positive middot (attributes).  It is vitally important for them- and all of us- to remember that just as Hashem commanded us regarding our interactions with Him, He commanded us how to interact with others.  Having just finished Sukkot and Shimini Atzeret that, among other things, symbolize the unity of the Jewish People, we should be inspired to enhance that unity through perfecting the way we treat one another.  Being careful with our interpersonal relations, including how we speak to and about others, is a wonderful way to achieve that unity.

Shabbat Shalom!  Chodesh Tov!

HOSTS NEEDED!

Dear Parents,

Torah Academy is very fortunate to have the Bnot Sheirut as part of our program, helping us reach new levels every day.

This year Philadelphia has been selected as the host city for the annual North American Shabbaton for all the Bnot Sheirut from around America. There are over one hundred girls in their second year of National Service serving in Jewish schools and communities on four continents, including approximately 80 young women in the United States and Canada.  These 80 young women will be in our community the weekend of Shabbat Parshat Lech-Lecha November 3rd to 6th, 2011.   The young women will arrive on Thursday morning and will return to their communities on Sunday afternoon.

This program greatly benefits our school and our children and we are therefore asking you to assist us in giving back, by helping to host these special young women.  We are looking for sleeping accommodations only for the Bnot Sheirut for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (November 3-5th). All their activities and meals will be taking place at Aish HaTorah in the Lower Merion community.

If you are able to help us to welcome and accommodate these young ladies, your help would be most appreciated. Please complete the form below and return to Elad Asulin  ASAP. If you have any questions, please email Rabbi Asulin eladasul@yahoo.com or call me at 610-642-7870.

"WHAT I LOVE ABOUT T.A.!"

What I love the most about Torah Academy is how much my kids love it. Every year they are excited to go back and there is no question that they feel a sense of belonging and security. I owe a great deal of gratitude to Torah Academy for providing this environment for my children.

~ Mrs. Joanna Brown

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you walk into TA you immediately gain a sense of warmth...whether it is from a friendly teacher passing by, or a happy child thirstily drinking from the water fountain to cool down from gym. Thank G-d, all of our children always felt secure within the Torah Academy walls, and always felt a sense of belonging. Needless to say, yet maybe most important, is the fact that our children have been given all of the fundamental Torah values for which to lead their lives and for that we will always be grateful.
To submit a short "Why I Love T.A." article please email tlibesman@torahacademyonline.org
