Summer of Discovery
As the spring turns to summer at Highland Green, residents enjoy their custom homes that were built just for them and welcome new friends who share interests. Together, they benefit from the vast ecology available to them right out their back door and participate in dynamic resident-driven activities at the Highland Green Community Center.
Excitement and engagement radiates outward from the spectacular 650 acre campus as well. Highland Green is situated directly at the crossroads of Midcoast Maine, a location which offers rich cultural, recreational and educational opportunities in the nearby college town of Brunswick. With equally easy access to the diverse cultural offerings of urban Portland and the artful beauty of Maine coastal villages and bold oceanfront. It is the perfect place to live the lifestyle that is uniquely Maine.
"Highland Green...what a great place to live: the Portland Symphony Orchestra to the south and fly-fishing camps to the north. Pinch me!!" raves Jim Wilkes, who relocated to Highland Green from Ohio with his wife Nancy in 2005.
Residents of Highland Green enjoy the countless cultural and volunteer offerings nearby. They pride themselves on being an experienced and diverse group of individuals engaged in an actively civic-minded lifestyle.
"Highland Green residents have brought tremendous interests and experience from all over the country and contribute to so many worthy organizations," remarks Gordon Brigham, who has lived at Highland Green with his wife Rosemary since 2003, and who volunteers at People Plus, a non-profit organization located nearby.
The Maine School Science Volunteers, a group of retired scientists who volunteer in classrooms throughout Maine and whose executive board meets at Highland Green, is just one of those many organizations. On Saturday, May 21 a Meet the Neighbors open house was held at Highland Green which allowed guests to learn more about a great volunteer organization, look at Highland Green homes and meet Highland Green residents.
"Highland Green events are wonderful. They are not only well organized and fun, " says Bev Brown who moved to Highland Green from Massachusetts in the spring of 2011 with her husband Paul, "they were extremely valuable to us in getting to know the people of Highland Green and the community itself."
The summer of 2011 is filled with marvelous Highland Green events designed to celebrate community, culture, volunteerism and the unique Highland Green lifestyle. Highland Green's Strength and Stability
At Highland Green, neighborly values and endless possibilities include opportunities to participate in the governance of the community. Cooperative home ownership is designed to offer lasting strength and stability, all of which is ensured through an experienced local professional management team that welcomes its residents to set standards for the collective maintenance of their homes and the protection of the assets of the Highland Green community.
One of the more recent developments at Highland Green was the formation of the Resident Reserves Investment Committee.

Ken is one of many residents helping ensure the community's future. |
Members of this 5 person group, in concert with the cooperative boards and budget committee work to enhance the community's reserve funds to ensure the quality and value of the community now and in the future. This team brings considerable background, experience and enthusiasm to the table and includes: a current member of LL Bean's International Department; a retired school superintendent and educational facilities planner; a retired insurance manager; a retired accountant; and two seasoned financial managers.
Highland Green Director of Operations, John Coughlin, serves on the committee and adds his extensive property management and budgeting skills to the group.
"A strong reserve study and plan is the hallmark of a strong community," says Coughlin. "At Highland Green, we have detailed all costs associated with maintaining the community now and into the future. There are no surprises." he adds. As Director, Coughlin serves as "coach" to the resident cooperative boards and committees. "I am honored to work with a community of residents who are dedicated to not only enjoying their unique lifestyle at Highland Green but to maintaining its financial permanence," says Coughlin.

The Genuine Article
Conservation, Ecology Nature at Highland Green
Highland Green was locally founded with conservation at its core. The 235 acre Cathance River Nature Preserve and the 35 acre Heath Sanctuary provide Highland Green residents with more than merely miles of trails and Maine woodlands to explore within their community. The non-profit Cathance River Education Alliance are stewards of the conservation land and connect the community to nature through volunteer membership, educational programs, and the unique "off the grid" Cathance River Ecology Center on the preserve at Highland Green.
|
CREA Ecology Center |
Eric Berube "grew up" on the Cathance River Nature Preserve. He became student liaison to the CREA board in 2005 while attending nearby Brunswick High School. His experiences on the conservation land within Highland Green sparked a passion for education, the environment and conservation. "Working with CREA from a young age directly influenced my life's path," says Eric who graduated from the University of Maine in May of 2011 with a degree in Wildlife Ecology.

at Highland Green. |
Eric's work on the preserve includes remote wildlife cameras, water monitoring, turtle growth monitoring, trail maintenance and he is an instructor for CREA's Environmental Leadership Program. "I love sharing my knowledge of ecology with Highland Green residents and guests and am amazed at the diverse natural environments right in the community," says Eric. The Cathance River Preserve has bountiful interesting plants and wildlife, not to mention the river.
The Heath Preserve, an inland wetland, is also a unique ecological formation. "The entire conservation at Highland Green happens to be a bird watcher's paradise," remarks Eric, who is also an avid birder, "and I look forward to continue working with Highland Green residents and guests to help them interact with nature at Highland Green." |
