  • Visits to the doctor for flu like illness nationally, increased slightly after 8 consecutive weeks of decline.
  • Influenza hospitalization rates have decreased across all age groups, but remain higher than expected. Though declining, hospitalization rates continue to be the highest in children 0-4 years old.

                TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY

Pay attention to your overall health. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy diet and managing stress. By taking care of yourself, your body will be better equipped to fend off the flu. Below are some additional tips:

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for 20 seconds or clean with an alcohol based hand cleaner. Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the bathroom door.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not into your hands. Throw you used tissue into the trash.
  • Consider getting a flu vaccine. The vaccine is very important for people with high risk for serious flu complications.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Wipe down public items that everyone uses, including, light switches, door knobs, toilet handles and toys. Alcohol-based disposable wipes are ideal for this use.

Did You Know........

Most of the world uses the Georgian calendar which has January as the first month of the year. It is named for the Roman God Janus. Legend has it that January and February were added to the 10 month Roman calender by the ruler Numa Pompilius in about 700B.C. Pompilius gave the month 30 days and the Romans later made January the 1st month of the year. Julius Caesar added a day to January, making it 31 days long.

In January the wolves came into the villages in search of food. The Anglo Saxons called January Wolfmonth.

In the southern half of the world, January is the warmest month. Plants are growing and animals are very active.  In the Northern half of the world, January is the coldest month. The plants are resting, waiting for for warmer spring temperatures. Woodchucks and bears are in hibernation and nature is quiet.
