August 2009
Greetings!

It's hard to believe that a new school year is just a few weeks away. The start of a new school year can mean the beginning of the fall allergy season. Dust mites and mold flourish in schools. When you add chalk dust from the bang of an eraser, it's no wonder researchers have noted a sharp spike in asthma symptoms among children in September and October. We have some information to share with you about allergies, as well as some helpful back-to-school tips.

Let's Talk Allergies

RAGWEED
During the fall season, ragweed is the biggest allergy trigger. The yellow flowering weed begins pollinating in August but continues through the fall season.

MOLD
Mold spores easily become airborne. Outside, the piles of damp leaves are breeding grounds for mold. Inside, damp basements, crawl spaces and bathrooms breed mold also.

DUST MITES
These little spider-like insects are another common indoor allergen. They are most prevelent in the humid summer months, but can get stirred up in the air when the furnace goes on in the fall.

HVAC systems can become breeding grounds for disease-causing bacteria, molds, mildew and viruses. These contaminants can spread through your home causing health problems such as allergies, respratory disease and asthema.

The first line of defense is to keep your home well-ventilated and clean. You need to keep your home cool (between 68 and 72 degrees F). You should also maintain low humidity (between 40% and 50%).

There are a few options available that can assist with better air quality in your home.
  1. Ultra violet light has been scientifically proven to reduce mold, fungus, viruses and other microscopic organisms that thrive indoors.
  2. An air purifier removes pollutants, dust, pollen, mold and pet dander in the air.

We have choosen both of the above items for our "Products of the Month". Learn more below.

Most people spend the majority of their time inside their homes. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns that the air inside your home may be up to five times more polluted than outside air. The EPA has listed indoor air quality (IAQ) as one of the top five environmental health risks today!
Microscopic mold, mildew, bacteria and viruses linger in the air leading to allergies, asthma, respiratory disease and infection. These unseen biohazards can live and breed within your air conditioning system's moist environment, encouraging these micro-organisms to breed, multiply and grow. Once airborne these unseen particles can pose a serious health threat.
Micro-organisms that travel through your indoor air can get trapped in the moist environment of your air conditioning system. Bacteria can then breed and spread throughout your home.

A UV system attacks and sterilizes micro-organisms where they live and breed in your air conditioning system. The system filters and purifies the air that moves through your home, improving the quality of the air you breathe.
At present, germicidal ultraviolet light (UV), when properly integrated into a heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system, is an effective method for preventing indoor air contamination from spreading throughout your home.

Bryant Air Purifier
perfect air
Your home is where you go to relax. However, pollen and mold spores can enter through open doors and windows, bacteria
and viruses can spread between family and friends, fine dust particles get kicked up from floors and furniture, and dander and hair fall
from pets. These contaminants can circulate
throughout your home, spreading disease or
triggering allergic and asthmatic reactions.
Bryant comes to the rescue with a complete
line of air filtration products led by the
Perfect Air™ Purifier.

The Perfect Air Purifier is ideal for homeowners with allergy concerns, those that are susceptible to airborne germs such as infants and the elderly, and those sensitive to the effects of pollen, pets and more. Unlike many portable air cleaners, the Perfect Air Purifier is extremely quiet and can treat the air throughout your home. Available in both gas furnace and fan coil models, the Perfect Air Purifier cleans over 100 times more air than popular portable units. Offering extremely high air filtration efficiency,
the Perfect Air™ Purifier uses patented germicidal technology so effective it captures and kills airborne pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and mold. The same technology is trusted to protect secure government facilities and hospital room patients. And, this product is as convenient as it is powerful because no cleaning is required. Simply remove and replace the media cartridge
periodically to maintain peak performance.

Thanks for taking the time to read our newletter. We are always searching for information to help keep your home and family healthy and safe. In our September issue we will talk about the benefits of the Noritz Tankless Hot Water Delivery System and a little piece about Labor Day (September 7th).

Sincerely,

Back to School Tips from the Experts!

New Teachers- If possible, have your child and his/her teacher meet prior to the 1st day of school. Just seeing their new classroom and teacher will calm their jitters.

Be Prepared- Do as much as possible the night before school. Pack up back packs, select clothes and make lunches. It will make for a smoother start to the day.

If you have little ones, get out the permanent marker and label clothing, backpacks and lunch boxes.

Don't wait until the last minute!- Make sure your child is working toward completing any shcool work that was assigned over the summer and will be due the first week of school.

Making the Grade- Kids can "stress out" about workloads or increased levels of dificulty in a new grade. Let your kids know that you and the teacher are there to assist and encourage their efforts. Stress the importance of excellent effort, not necessarily grades and the value of learning, not performing.

Fashion- This matters to kids, especially in the older grades. Check your school's dress code regulations. If your child likes his/her clothes, they will be more self-confident.

Scheduling- Address concerns about drop-off, pick-up, etc. Middle school students who worry about changing classes, gym and locker concerns, need to be reminded that "everyone is in the same boat". After a few days of practice they'll be fine.

The Bus- The bus can be overwhelming. The "big kids", noise and confusion can make riding the bus a common fear for young students. If possible wait until 2nd grade to have your child ride the bus. Drive the route several times so your child can become familiar with where they're going and their bus stop.

The more comfortable children are with the details of school, the better their academic attitude will be.
