Money Saving Heating Tips
The following are some ideas on saving energy dollars.
  1. Turn down your thermostat to 68 degrees. For every degree you lower your heat in the 60-70 degree range, you will save up to 5% on heating costs.
  2. Install ceiling fans. During the winter months, set them to go clockwise. This will recirculate hot air at the ceiling (heat rises). During the summer, set them counterclockwise. This motion will create a downdraft making your room feel 8 degrees cooler
  3. Replace or clean your furnace filters once a month. Dirty filters restrict air flow. Keeping your furnace clean, lubricated and properly adjusted will save you up to 5% on your heating bills.
  4. Consider a humidifier. Properly humidified air makes your home feel warmer and more comfortable, so you can keep your thermostat setting lower. It can make a 68 degree room feel like it's 76 degrees.
  5. Install a programable thermostat that can be pre-set to lower the temperature when you're at work or sleeping.
  6. Close heat vents in rooms that are mostly unused, such as guest rooms, but only if you don't have a forced air furnace.(A forced air furnace is designed to heat a specific space.
  7. Move furniture, draperies and other objects blocking registers, radiators or air-conditioning to ensure proper air flow.
  8. Don't put lights by your thermostat. They can cause your thermostat to have an inaccurate reading.
  9. Seal up the leaks. Caulk leaks around windows and doors. Check the bathroom, underneath the kitchen sink, pipes inside the closets, etc. If you find a gap at the point where the pipe or vent goes through the wall, seal it up.

Finally, consider replacing your old gas appliances with Energy Star products. If your gas water heater is more than 12 years old and/or your furnace is over 15 years old, replacing them with Energy Star rated models are about 15% more efficient than standard models.

Tips To Avoid Home Repair Fraud
When hiring a contractor for remodeling or home repair work keep the following items in mind.
  1. Get your estimate in writing and get more than one. Don't fall for prices that seem "too good to be true(they probably are)
  2. Get the name and address of the business and check old phone books to see how long the company has been in business.
  3. When you are ready to sign a contract, inspect it carefully. Make sure it includes all the items listed below.
    • The contractor's full name, address and phone number.
    • A full description of the work to be performed.
    • Starting date and estimated completion date.
    • Total cost for the work being performed, including charges for estimates.
    • Schedule and method of payment.
  4. Never sign a contract that you don't fully understand. Also make sure there are no blank spaces in your contract.
  5. Find out if a contractor guarantees their work and products and get it in writing.
  6. Request lien waivers. This protects you from claims against you or your property in the event that a general contractor fails to pay material suppliers or subcontractors.
  7. You have three(3)business days to cancel a contract if the sale is made and signed in your home.
  8. Never make the final payment until you are satisfied and all subcontractors have been paid by the contractor.
