Ola from Espana!!

Editorial

I'm writing to you from the historic city of Cordova which is an amazing confluence of Muslim, Jewish and Christian history.  Even though the term multiculturalism is relatively modern, the concept was respected in Cordova centuries ago as is evidenced in the streets here. There are monuments here from a period when all these cultures co-existed peacefully.

Of course, history is also testament to periods of extreme animosity between religions. Sadly, these prejudices continue to this day around the world. India is often in turmoil with rivalries between Hindus and Muslims. Deepa Mehta's film, Midnight's Children, captures one such period. MyBindi is offering it's fans a chance to enjoy a FREE screening of this acclaimed film on October 18! Click here to see how you can get free passes for all your friends and family!

Speaking of free movies, it's the Cineplex Community Day on October 20th!! You and your family and friends can all enjoy a wide selection of films (for Free) and also enjoy a variety of concessions for just $2See details here!

After touring Barcelona, Granada and Cordova, I leave tonight for Seville where I will spend a few days before returning home to Toronto!

Yup, I'll be back just in time for the  Trillium Diwali Gala!

Private Screening :: Midnight's Children
Midnight's Children

MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN is an epic film from Oscar-nominated director Deepa Mehta, based on the Booker Prize winning novel by Salman Rushdie.

At the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, as India proclaims independence from Great Britain, two newborn babies are switched by a nurse in a Bombay hospital. Saleem Sinai, the illegitimate son of a poor Hindu woman, and Shiva, the offspring of wealthy Muslims, are fated to live the destiny meant for each other. Their lives become mysteriously intertwined and are inextricably linked to India's whirlwind journey of triumphs and disasters. From the unlikely romance of Saleem's grandparents to the birth of his own son, MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN is a journey at once sweeping in scope and yet intimate in tone. Hopeful, comic and magical the film conjures images and characters as rich and unforgettable as India herself.

Just Matata by Braz Menezes

"Totally enjoyable, part history and part travelogue." (Lethbridge Herald, August 28, 2012)

The merging of cultures is an experience that can never be the same for two people or two families but reading Just Matata - Sin, Saints and Settlers, allows us to reflect on how our own Indian cultures have been molded by our host country, regardless of whether we live in Kenya, Canada, or elsewhere in the world.

Goa has been an integral part of the Indian Union for over half a century, yet relatively few South Asians know much of the special Indo-Portuguese culture, and how their immigration to East Africa, along with thousands of Indians before them who built the Railways from the Ocean port of Mombasa to Lake Victoria, shaped modern African history.

This is the broad overarching theme that is the coming together of two cultures that are joined by the Indian Ocean.

Bollywood icon Rani Mukherji plays Marathi girl Aiyyaa in this delightful Amelie-style comedy. Aiyyaa lives with her eccentric family next to a smelly rubbish dump, lost in her dream-like Bollywood fantasy world. She gets a

job at an art college where she meets a soul mate and a buck-toothed Lady Gaga lookalike. Aiyyaa goes man-hunting until she catches the smell of her dream man - a hunky Tamil student (Prithviraj), who she stalks much to his annoyance. At the same time, her barely sane parents are arranging her marriage to a good, sensible boy who loves Marathi art cinema and rose planting. As her dream hunk mysteriously disappears, Aiyyaa is torn: should she settle for the rose garden? Director Sachin Kundalkar deftly delivers on-the-button gags, and ecstatic song and dance numbers. One not to miss!

My Body My Temple Blog

Diseases like cancer come from repressed rage and diseases like diabetes come from repressed grief.  This is what my spiritual teacher said to a group of us in 2007.  It stayed with me for a long time, an ancient piece of wisdom that resonated with truth and with purpose.

I also knew the remedy for both.

In 2006 I went to Masala Mendhi Masti at the CNE grounds.  And that is where I came face to face with Laughter Yoga.  It was such a simple concept - laugh for no reason.

Hello readers! Today's blog is short and sweet, but profound and deep. (That was my attempt to rhyme ala Dr. Seuss style!) Ok so perhaps I'm no rhyming genius, but Dr. Seuss is! Though many of us remember the books from our childhood, did you know that his books contain messages that are applicable to everyone, not just kids? Yes indeed. And I recently stumbled across this and I wanted to share it with you - it's amazing the power of words are and how timeless these life lessons are!

Enjoy and be grateful for being you! "There is no one alive who is Youer than You".

The Clarity of Distance

By Ayesha Chatterjee.

Poetry of place, identity and belonging.

Written in spare language and often using metaphors drawn from both Eastern and Western sources, the poems in this first collection pare down the complexity of existence in today's global society into simple moments of truth.

Chatterjee believes that the power of poetry is in its accessibility and this is reflected in the simplicity of her writing. Much of her poetry is short, some of it is photographic and all of it is approachable. Her poems are intended to pry her readers out of complacency

into looking at the world differently, perhaps even into thinking of their place in it.

There is a soft thread of violence running through this collection juxtaposed against the imagery in much the same way as the intention of her approach.

 Green Chutney in 'Midnight's Children'

Mongrel Media presents Midnight's Children - an epic film from Oscar-nominated director Deepa Mehta, based on the Booker Prize-winning novel by Salman Rushdie. It is releasing in theatres November 2nd, 2012. Click HERE for details on a special private screening happening October 18, 2012.

GREEN CHUTNEY: IN THE MOVIE

Saleem's memories of his childhood and of home are wrapped up in his ayah Mary's green chutney throughout Midnight's Children. The bright green condiment is always on the table, and served with every meal, including breakfast. When Mary consoles the young Saleem in the hospital after the startling revelations of his "bad blood", she promises him "all the chutney in the world". On Saleem's lonely first night in his aunt Emerald's household, he has a photo of Mary and a jar of her chutney on his bedside table: his only comforts. And when Mary meets teenage Saleem at the Karachi train station when he returns from exile, the first thing Mary offers to do for him is to make his favourite chutney. And of course the discovery of Mrs. Braganza's bottled chutney is...well, momentous.

As Saleem says in his voiceover, narrated by Salman Rushdie, "Sometimes emotions are stirred into food and become what you feel. And sometimes people leak into each other, like flavours when you cook."
