Game On! Indian Touch to Olympic Arts in London

A handful of illustrious Indians have lent their creative touch to give the London Olympics some Indian touches.

When the 2012 Olympics unveils July 27, a reality that will transcend the historic fortnight is a creation of art with an Indian touch. Iconic sculptor Anish Kapoor, the India-born winner of the Turner Prize, has given Britain its Olympic mascot - the ArcelorMittal Orbit - the country's biggest public art installation.

The giant Orbit is a 115-metre high steel observation tower at Olympic Park in Stratford in London that is likely to help in the post-Olympic regeneration of the area. Kapoor designed the Orbit with Cecil Balmond with steel donated by India-born steel tycoon Laskhmi Mittal, who remains the richest man in Britain with an estimated fortune of 112.7 billion pounds as in April 2012, according to British estimates.

Recalling the project, Mittal says he "never expected" it would turn out this big. He said it was not just the supply of thousands of tonnes of steel but in reality ArcelorMittal "has given much more than steel".

 Pancakes That are Healthy!

Hi folks! I wanted to blog this week about my absolute favourite Sunday morning recipe - Protein pancakes! I have written this recipe years ago here on Wellness Works! but I wanted to give you all a reminder of how quick, easy and absolutely delicious this recipe is!

Its as simple as:

  • 1/2 cup Oatmeal (quick oats)
  • 1/2 cup Cottage cheese (1%)
  • 1/2 cup Egg whites
  • 1 pack of Splenda or 1-2 tsp organic cane sugar
  • 1/4 cup ground Flaxseed (optional for more Omega punch!)
Mix ingredients together and blend. I use the Magic bullet - its the perfect size and does the job with just 10 seconds of blending. Voila - you have your batter!

 The Invitation

A moving story that redefines the meaning of family, friendship, and success among a group of first-generation Indian immigrants.

When Vikram invites three of his college friends to his son's graduation from MIT, they accept out of obligation and curiosity, viewing the party as a twenty-fifth reunion of sorts. Village genius Vikram, now the founder of a lucrative computer company, is having the party against his son's wishes. Frances and Jay regret accepting: Frances, a real estate agent, hasn't sold a house in a year; Jay's middle management job isn't brag worthy; and their daughter is failing the eleventh grade. Lali plans to hide the fact that her once-happy marriage is crumbling because her American husband is discovering his Jewish roots. Each had left UCLA expecting to be successful and have even more successful children. At Vikram's Newport Beach mansion, the showmanship they anticipate dissolves as each is forced to deal with his or her own problems. The follow-up to A Good Indian Wife, Anne Cherian's novel resonates with the poignancy of real life colliding with expectations unmet.

Preliminary estimates are that 15,000 people danced into a frenzy at the 2nd annual Bollywood Monster Mash-Up evening concert this past Saturday, July 28th at Mississauga Celebration Square.

The best part is that we're getting thanked for throwing a huge party that ended with a Bollywood mosh-pit!" says music composer and show producer Vikas Kohli of FatLabs; adding, "We got away with creating some crazy and indulgent interpretations of Bollywood and we're stoked that the audience loved dancing and singing along to every minute of it. I owe a lot of thanks to the unbelievably talented performers, the doggedly hard working team, our sponsors and community partners."
