Dear Members,  Editorial

Welcome to another edition of MyBindi's newsletter.

If you're wondering why you're seeing this newsletter at 9 pm on Thursday (or possibly early on Friday morning) it's because the days just seem to be running away from me!

Summer is the busiest time for MyBindi.  Take for example this weekend alone.  This Saturday, we're rooting for the Bollywood Monster Mash-Up, a FREE concert that returns to Mississauga's Celebration Square with over 80 singers, dancers and musicians.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the Greater Toronto Area, Saturday is all about the Mayor's Cricket Festival in Ajax!

With August just around the corner, things are already heating up in the Capital City as Ottawa celebrates the 4th Annual South Asian Fest.

Closer to home, we're gearing up for India Day Celebrations on August 11 which will include the India Day Parade followed by celebrations at Yonge-Dundas Square

On August 12th, MyBindi brings you the first ever first ever Toronto Eid Festival  at Woodbine Banquet Hall. Not only is the festival offering FREE admission but there will also be FREE Iftar for all in attendance!

While you mark your calendars with these dates, remember the auditions for Nachenge Saari Raat are this Sunday!!  If you qualify, you can be perform at the NSR stage at MOSAIC Festival.  See details below.

Most of my time these days is taken by the planning of the Toronto Eid Festival.  I will send out a special bulletin on that perhaps tomorrow.

Now, I better run and get some groceries.  After all, I need to send over my scanned report to Neilsen.  Yup, I'm still shopping, scanning and earning rewards!  All, in a day's work! ;)

Have a great weekend!  Until next time..

Regards,

Game On! Indian Touch to Olympic Arts in London

A handful of illustrious Indians have lent their creative touch to give the London Olympics some Indian touches.

When the 2012 Olympics unveils July 27, a reality that will transcend the historic fortnight is a creation of art with an Indian touch. Iconic sculptor Anish Kapoor, the India-born winner of the Turner Prize, has given Britain its Olympic mascot - the ArcelorMittal Orbit - the country's biggest public art installation.

The giant Orbit is a 115-metre high steel observation tower at Olympic Park in Stratford in London that is likely to help in the post-Olympic regeneration of the area. Kapoor designed the Orbit with Cecil Balmond with steel donated by India-born steel tycoon Laskhmi Mittal, who remains the richest man in Britain with an estimated fortune of 112.7 billion pounds as in April 2012, according to British estimates.

Recalling the project, Mittal says he "never expected" it would turn out this big. He said it was not just the supply of thousands of tonnes of steel but in reality ArcelorMittal "has given much more than steel".

 Pancakes That are Healthy!

Hi folks! I wanted to blog this week about my absolute favourite Sunday morning recipe - Protein pancakes! I have written this recipe years ago here on Wellness Works! but I wanted to give you all a reminder of how quick, easy and absolutely delicious this recipe is!

Its as simple as:

  • 1/2 cup Oatmeal (quick oats)
  • 1/2 cup Cottage cheese (1%)
  • 1/2 cup Egg whites
  • 1 pack of Splenda or 1-2 tsp organic cane sugar
  • 1/4 cup ground Flaxseed (optional for more Omega punch!)
Mix ingredients together and blend. I use the Magic bullet - its the perfect size and does the job with just 10 seconds of blending. Voila - you have your batter!

Being Elmo

 Really?  Muppets?

Doesn't quite go with your high tech Yogi image says a friend of mine.

I think that's the most wonderful part.

I grew up on Sesame Street, Captain Kangaroo and the Great Space Coaster.  These shows were formative - I learned about the world, languages and different people from these colorful characters.  Ernie and Bert were my first gay role models.

I came to see puppets as truth tellers and bearers of innocence.  I love puppets of all kinds.  My fascination didn't end in childhood.  Movies like Labyrinth,  Never Ending Story are still my all time favorites.

Perusing NetFlix this past weekend  I came across a treasure. Being Elmo is the story of Kevin Clash, the brilliant puppeteer behind our all time favorite Muppet - Elmo.  I watched his story unfold with wonder. The documentary tracks Kevin from his early fascination with puppets to his work with Jim Henson, the genius behind Sesame Street and the Muppet Show.

I look at India through a woman's eyes: Diplomat-author Vikas Swarup

Diplomat Vikas Swarup, the celebrity author of the novel "Q & A" adapted into the Oscar-winning movie "Slumdog Millionaire" has stepped into a woman's shoes to explore the changing face of 21st century middle-class India in his new book.

His new novel, "The 7 Tests Of Sapna Sinha" is a dramatic narrative about an ordinary middle-class working woman in New Delhi who is offered to run a company by an eccentric billionaire; provided she passes a series of seven tests.

The novel, to be published by Simon & Schuster later this year, is similar to the "frame of 'Q&A' told in a voice of a woman from the female perspective", Swarup told IANS in an interview.

The book is set in the west Delhi neighbourhood of Rohini.

Bollywood star becomes first Indian to pose nude for Playboy

A Bollywood starlet has become the first Indian woman to pose nude for Playboy, sparking a wave of criticism in her home country where the magazine is banned.

Sherlyn Chopra, 28, will appear in the November issue.

However, a series of teasing interviews has provoked a round of condemnation from women's rights activists who accuse her of undermining the fight against sexual harassment and abuse.

Miss Chopra herself has admitted that she has not yet told her mother about the Playboy shoot.

"It is not an easy task to be nude in front of the camera and look good at the same time," said Miss Chopra in an interview with the BBC's Hindi service.

She added that she had written to Playboy asking to model and received a response within days.

"I have become the first Indian to pose naked for Playboy and nobody can take away that achievement from me," she said.

"My sister is proud of my achievement. I haven't told anything to my mother, but I think I will visit her and tell her that she has to accept me the way I am." Critics have complained that the magazine has billed her as a Bollywood legend, despite only appearing in a handful of films and being best known for Bigg Boss, India's answer to Big Brother.
